Finished at £1,578,316 - reaching both stretch goals.

It will be glorious.

Really glad to see this exceeded the goal! Will play it of course, not sure how well it will stack up against Eve Online, which is my current "Elite" of choice. Have a feeling this will be more like X? (didn't see the multiplayer video yet, but the fact there is a video specifically for multiplayer does not bode well for a fan of the "one persistent world")

AFAIK it's not really clear just how the multiplayer aspects of it will work and while it's supposed to be one persistent universe there's a rather lengthy thread over on the E: D forums debating just what that means.

What they've said is that it will be possible to play it in one of three ways: as a single player game, as a game where you see and play with only friends or as a game where you see and play with everyone else.

At the same time though, they've said that only 32 ships can be in one sector at one time so just how they'll work out the details of that is going to be interesting.

As for X3 I actually just bought that a few days ago - Steam has it on sale these days so I picked up the 'Gold package' which includes Reunion, Terran Conflict and Albion Prelude.

Just briefly tried it so far, but it looks really good. Graphics are great and the controls seem to work really well.

I only became aware of X3 existing at all about a week ago when this video was linked in one of the E: D discussion threads

You're sorry? That's nothing compared to how sorry that poor girl was over the lack of hard Kha'ak action. Or those people getting violated by the Kha'ak!

Is there an expected time frame for this to be released?

I tried buying the original elite back in the 80;s for my Amstrad and being unable to get it (places never had it in stock, when i ordered it, it was broken ). I've been waiting ever since for a new version to be released (didnt have a PC when frontier was released).

I've played several other games that are often compared to it, but they dont seem to have the same free trading element that i imagined Elite to have.

Have you tried EVE ? I doubt anything will approach it's trading element / "player driven economy"

No, I've though about it on several occassions as it looks like the kind of thing i would love to play, but it's the usual excuse of time and money unfortunately and concern that my laptop isnt powerful enough.

Just looked at the price and its not as expensive as i thought, so i might give it a go at somepoint. It has a free trial, so i could see how my laptop holds up.

If you do try it, PM me your email or hit up http://www.reddit.com/r/Eve/comments...read/?sort=new for a 21 day "buddy referral" code, and also make sure the buddy will xfer you half the credits if you subscribe. While the referral bonus is not huge to someone playing a few months+, half of it is a massive bankroll boost to a new player, especially an aspiring trader. /derail

I never played the original, what's the draw of this game over Star Citizen? They seem pretty similar - open world online space fighting and trading sims.

Elite was the one that started it all.

Not just space sims, but the whole 'open world (not to say universe)' genre before it even became a genre.

Comparing one not yet released game to another not yet released game is pretty pointless, but ED is made by one half of the duo who started it all, while SC is made by one of the guys who took inspiration from them.

That said - I backed both and have high hopes for both. Oh - and Limit Theory too. It's a good time for space sim fans.

I'm aware of its pedigree, just seems odd that two of the biggest kickstarters to complete are for basically the exact same game. Except one has about ten million dollars more crowd-funding behind it :>

Cap ships parking that close to each other is a small potential deal breaker for me, real immersion killer.

They dont have to be at the other side of the solar system from each other, but at least some distance that recognises science and stuff is good at making weapons accurate over long distances. There has to be some balance with gameplay sure, but this is going way to far imo.

I would probably live with it, but it would grate somewhat.

Watch this from 2:00 for wot I think is a more immersive believable approach:

Relax.

The video was put together to be used as 'visual inspiration' for composers to create music to while selecting a composer for the game.

It's all in-game footage, but it has been through quite a bit of post production. There's a video coming up explaining how it was made.

It's not meant as a 'how to' for how you should play the game - if you don't want your battle cruiser that close to another one, just don't put it there

Those battle cruisers were not player controlled, that engagement was an instance or whatever. So its perfectly feasible that is how NPC engagements will playout. Also how close I park my battle cruiser is going to depend on how weapon systems are implemented.
