Go pick up Oblivion: GOTY edition for $20 or $30 somewhere and see if you can get through all the content by the time Skyrim comes out. If you don't like it, you saved yourself some $$ on Skyrim, and if you do, sweet!

You should pick up Oblivion now.

Im ashamed to admit I have over 300 hours logged on steam (mostly since black friday ), and often still choose to play it over Portal 2, Witcher 2, Total War... It cannot be overstated how amazing the game is

I dunno. I dont think oblivion has aged very well.

If you are gonna play it, play it on PC with some mods to fix some of the ****ed leveling issues.

Yeah, sorry I didnt clarify that. Mods are of course integral to the experience; I cant even remember what the game is like without Oscuros Oblivion Overhaul (OOO), Deadly Reflex for combat, and a ton of housing/other content mods

I couldn't put more then about 10hrs in Oblivion on the PS3. The fighting is way to much of a pain in the ass, I couldn't stand the map and the fact that you could read every god damn book you picked up and never could tell which book was important and which were garbage. Hopefully they fixed these things about the game.

I liked the leveling in Oblivion. If you gamed the system through "effecient leveling" you could become super OP and walk around laying waste to everything you came in to contact with. Took forever but it was fun.

FWIW I never played any of the other ES games so Oblivion was my first experience in that world. I'm sure if I was used to something else I'd hate world leveling as well.

This adds infinitely to the immersion and detracts virtually nothing from the game (I mean books you need to read for quests/etc are clearly designated from the quest log).

I mean I dont even read them most the time, but the fact that theyre there and have a consistent, compelling fiction is pretty amazing imo

Thankfully you were the only person on the planet that liked the system Oblivion used. Hooray for a small group of raiders living in tents in the winter having weapons and armor worth a fortune!

I'd strongly recommend it on the PC with a handful of top notch mods.

This is a good list, IMO.

The only important books were the ones that gave you an install skill bonus upon opening.

I just like going and destroying things. It bothered me that I didn't know what books were important or not. And I don't see how things could be labels as quest items when nothing written but only symbols. If they actually write quest,items...etc in English and not just symbols that would be much better as well.

After reading the Mods link I would never buy Skyrim without a PC worth playing it on. If for no other reason then the map mod that was another thing I really disliked about Oblivion.

I can see the books being confusing. I think I had the same issue when I played Morrowind. "These can't all just be written for the hell of it, can they?" was my initial reaction. There was also a lot of junk you could just pick up and sell, and it wasn't clear what was actually useful and what wasn't.

Yeah, I mean that was part of what bothered me about Oblivion.

Creating a world full of useless crap like cooking utensils, yarn, and endless amounts of pointless books doesn't really "immerse" me in anything. It just makes me go through chest after chest of bull**** to find the one useful item somebody has in their house.

i didnt like how easy it was to get to your objective in oblivion with it pin pointed on your map

i liked the system in morrowind where it gave vague instructions

"follow this path then north of the mountain range" then it ends up being 10x further then you would of originally expected

good times

Good link, I might have to get it on PC again, should be fairly cheap on Steam I guess.

+1. I didn't mind Oblivion the way it was, but Morrowind was awesome for that reason. Having to pay attention to everything while walking was great

Morrowind was awesome, it had character. Oblivion was much more standard fantasy fare. No cliff racers is a nice touch, though.

Anybody else play Arena? I really liked how in that game you had to ask around to learn where to go for your quest. Whenever you end up finding the guy you have to kill or whatever it felt much more real and rewarding. It can be a little tedious at times, but I think I prefer it to the cut and dry go to the red dot on your map and do X then go to green dot and do Y style of quests. When it's the latter it feels too much like you're just clearing areas of content and then moving on to the next area. Which when push comes to shove is what you do in all RPGs I just don't want it to feel like that.

If I could go into hibernation/deep sleep after my Vegas trip at the end of this month until 11/11/11 I 100% would.
