Diablo 3 Diablo 3

I'm not sure if you're trolling or serious.

First of all, they've never promised the game to be released in 2011. Second, beta != demo.

and trollolololololol @ any notable portion of betatesters (especially of those who play the beta for more than few hours) being those "impulse buyers"

Anyone who is spending more than 10 hours playing that beta would snap-buy the game when it's released even if it was priced at $100 and you'd have to sacrifice a goat for a working license key.

Except this beta basically is a demo.

As for impulse buyers; I fell into that category myself for other games.

If Black Ops would have had a large beta that I participated in, I would most definitely NOT have purchased it, even after playing for 10-20 hours total.

But no, I saw some videos and had some friends say good things about it, and I bought it. If I had gotten time to play a demo version of it (which is what the D3 "beta" is) I would have saved myself 60 bucks.

There's no way that someone who isn't a diablo fanboy would play that beta through more than twice, that was my point. It doesn't really matter whether they get into beta for 2 days or 2 months, they'll be done with it in few days anyway.

I doubt there's really any people who'd buy the game after playing beta for a few weeks, but wouldn't buy it if they had the opportunity to play the same (2 hour) beta for several months. That's what you claimed will happen.

Even if people did choose not to buy it as a result of the wait or being unimpressed with the beta, the beta provides hype and exposure that will more than make up for that.

Every time they release a new thing whether it be the skill generator or the item list or whatever, more and more people start to want the game and people who had forgotten about it or cooled off will start to think about it some more.

I don't think Blizzard really has anything to worry about anyway. At the time D2 sold 1 million copies faster than any PC game ever. They are just showing off at this point.

Maybe, but keeping up concurrent users at levels that they need for that long means you'll need a LOT more people.

Which means that all those window shoppers will get their fill and not buy the full game.

We're already basically a month into the beta process. YouTube and streaming sites weren't as big as they are now back when D2 was in beta, which needs to be considered.

D3 beta has too MUCH content to entice fence-sitters to buy (hrm, the warrior isn't that good, but I really want to try a wizard when the game releases, so I'll buy it and see how it goes) and not ENOUGH content to keep people logging in to do stuff after they kill Leoric a couple times.

Imo, this means that they'll need to invite way more people to keep the concurrent user number high. And if it goes on for 6 months, a lot of the impulse buyers will get their fill and not purchase.

They're costing themselves money with this ******ed development cycle. That's my overall point.

I might just not be getting point across clear enough.

I don't agree with this though. They are making all the right moves. Delaying the start of the closed beta, whether or not intentional, is genius. The way to make someone want something more is to tell them they can't have it with chance of maybe getting it soon. The more exclusive the more special it seems. Especially with something that has such a good reputation. It's mean, but it's good marketing.

Also the type of person who would opt in to the beta is far less likely to be an impulsive buyer or casual diablo fan than the average eventual purchaser of the game. Most casual fans are content seeing videos put on the front page of gamespot or ign or whatever.

I know a lot of people who bought SC2 and quickly got bored with it or just don't play it anymore. I would put them in the impulsive buyer category. Basically they play lots of games just to pass the time. They will most likely buy D3, but they probably have no idea how to even opt into the D3 beta.

Agree with everything in this post, well written.

Those "window shoppers" certainly aren't the same people who play beta for hours, look all the possible beta footage, go through skill calculators and item lists... They're the "oh, new diablo is out? gotta try that" camp. Practically nobody is gonna spend the time to play the beta and go through 10 hours of video footage and other stuff, then decide not to buy the game. Those who do, have already made up their mind.

You don't need 6+ months to "polish" a game like Diablo.

This is a "holy ****, Act 3 and 4 are taking longer to make than we thought. PANIC BUTTON!"

This also tells me that closed beta will be pushed back even further, or that invites will go out VERY slowly.

Letting the masses in to play the same 30 minutes over and over again for 6 months has to kill sales with people who were going to be impulse buyers.
Solution: give beta priority to people with D2 on their bnet account?

I don't have D2 in my bnet account!

Why would anyone add it there? Isn't the "new" battle.net completely different than classic.

can't wait to see the "PvP removed from D3" announcement just to troll Kirby.
09-23-2011 , 07:46 PM
Who cares about the beta, I'd rather wait a little longer for a better game.

So I'm loving the items on the released item list, but is there a list of what the possible random properties are? I need to start imagining what the perfect weapons are.
