A good start to this thread would be linking people to the sites that are credible to submit replays. Phase 2 screwed up a lot of those sites so I'm hoping that they are fixed now that the game is launched.

I will surely be posting some replays once I get my game.

Is there a easy way of putting it on? Or do we need to talk about it with commentary? If so, what site? I assume Camtasia works with it.

Not sure what you mean, but I think the thread will probably contain people posting their replays & then others posting comments.

Also, not sure if http://starcraft2reps.com/ still works, but I liked that site b/c you didn't have to regsiter.

I didn't know if was was more for showing and talking about your game that you played or "What did I do wrong?"

Ya, an explanation in the first post for the newer players would've been nice, but it's basically for helping others get better ("what did I do wrong/how do I improve past silver?") & whatnot (possibly interesting games, etc.).

I'm copying a post by LuckayLuck on TL (he's Trump) in here that has some handy things about critiquing your own replays so we don't end up with a 100 replays of people stopping SCV production at 10 workers per base. The post is mostly terran based but can be handy for protoss as well (zerg is a little different due to larvae mechanic.)

Most bronze, silver, or gold league players lose because of macro. If I were to watch your replay, I'd immediately hone in on one of three things with your submitted replay:
  • Your build order is subpar. Try starting with 10 supply, 12 barracks, 13 refinery, 15 orbital command.
  • You're not building SCVs constantly. You're not expanding fast enough.
  • Your buildings are idle. They're not building units.

Watch your own replay and if this isn't the main reason for your loss and your loss falls into the "didn't scout / prepare a good countermixarmy / micro / bad attack planning / etc" I'll commentate on that. I've just found that 95% of the time, it's because of as simple a reason as one of those listed above. As a rough guide of how many SCVs you should have at certain game times assuming CONSTANT production of SCVs and starting construction of a command centers at certain times (the green shade) I've attached an image.

Posting your Replay:
Please keep your replay in this format when you make your post!
  • First thing in your post: Upload your replay to http://www.gamereplays.org/starcraft...ys.php?game=33 - you'll have to register on the website first. After you've uploaded your replay, copy the EMBED CODE link and post it in your post. Doing this SHOULD list the matchup in a nice picture form.
  • List your league (Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze) and Rank.
  • Give a brief overview of your strategy vs his strategy (i.e. "MMM v 4-Gate", "1/1/1 v Mass Muta")
  • Give a sentence or two about what YOU think you did wrong.

Example Format:

90ish ranked platinum.

This replay is a 9 min terran vs protoss match. I started out with a somewhat normal M/M push-- not perfect by any means-- and ran into his massive zealot (with added stalkers and sentries) army. They had charge and raped my marine/marauder army.

I can think of 2 reasons why I lost, one being that at a few points in the game I had a bigger army than him and should have attacked much earlier than I did; and the second being that my micro was absolutely horrid in the main battle. My macro probably wasn't the best, too... and build orders.

Resources:

Demo of easy starting build order vs all races - 3 barracks marauder/marine push. requirement: 30 APM. Recommended for any bronze/silver/gold player with a "bad" build order as a place to start.

I was going to post my first placement match, but i'm too noob to find my replay folder. Does anyone know where i can find that?

Oh i got it, that was ******ed to find.

it was: [username]>documents>Starcraft 2>accounts>[account name, some random number]>another random number folder>replays>Multiplayer>[replay name]

Why not just make a folder in :E>Starcraft 2 where i have it installed is beyond me.

It's ZvP, and i was gold level in beta phase 2, although you can't really see that from this replay. I am going to say it's due to being rusty.

Major mistakes: slipping in queen macro, not taking my third/fourth fast enough, not playing versus AI to get to know the new ladder maps. So generally a terribad replay but i just thought it was pathetic no one had posted a replay yet.

EDIT 2: btw, i believe my Build order was not ideal either, i decided on the fly when i saw the map that my normal build was not a good idea (14 pool, 15 hatch) because your natural has 3! entrances. I thought i'd go roach / ling into expo but i had not practiced that build a lot.

you pretty much nailed it
  • the reasoning behind gas before pool is to instantly get zerg speed, so make sure to get that as soon as you get 100/100 and make good use of it for scouting / etc
  • if you were to refer to that worker chart, you're far below what you "should" have
  • end the game with 5k minerals, low gas. Build more hatcheries, zerglings, collect more gas
  • generally dangerous to have your army so far up. Zerg wants to stay on creep. Spread creep. Put a zergling on the forward xel'naga tower.

Other than playing, what is the best way to get better at SC2? I have never played RTS games. Probably watching replays from good players?

Thanks for the tips man :-) Working on it.

Me and IFX in our first 2v2 placement match. We did some work. I'm way to slow still...wouldn't mind some critiquing.

I was a little rusty being away since phase 2.

Plz use my Starcraft name. haha

Edit: Have to comment on this because I got a good laugh. Just started watching the replay and Needle says, "Are we sharting a base?" hahahaha

-In addition to constantly producing scvs, make sure you're constantly producing units & not letting your money pile up.
-Throwing down a scan every once in a while or sending out a probe/scv to check for expansions (before Fx has his obs out) might be helpful, so that you're not in the dark as to what your opponents are doing (or getting too far ahead in the macro game).
-Scanning /possibly pushing out after stim was done might have been a decent idea, & you didn't really have to wait for charge to finish (especially since it had just started).
-Dropping the ebay after scouting mutas was good, however I don't recall seeing any turrets built.
-Also, as you move up the ladder, you'll most likely have to incorporate expanding.

That's about it. Definitely not bad for your first team game.

Alright, I didn't utilize scan at all. I was calling in those MULES(when I remembered =\). I completely forgot to build the turrets, haha. Gotta know to use scans more.

SCV and units has to become second nature...gotta get back into groove of SC.

Awesome thank you. Oh and from now on I'll put a time on the replays(and use IFX's gamertag, lol) so people know how long its going to be before they download.

Heres a question, when should I have expanded? Back in BW I probably would have done it in the span of that game but I'm not quite comfortable enough yet in this(read: quick enough).

The funny part was that you said "sharting."

I watched the replay and I had some zealots just chilling out. Not sure why my hot key wasn't working, unless I had a warpgate in the hotkey, which is possible and it's a good thing I didn't check during the replay because I hate when that happens.

I need to get my game on. I feel like I'm all over the place.

That zerg player didn't have anything except mutas and the protoss was trying to tech up and expand too fast. It was a good push after I realized the zerg didn't have anything. As always, it could be better and we will see much tougher opponents.

Also, Needle, not sure if you know this or not. I don't play Terran, but when I was screwing around with them in the build testers...When you put down a building, have the SCV selected and then SHIFT > Click to where you want it to go next as a waypoint. Like, back to the mineral line. With Refineries, you can just click it back on the refinery. I noticed at least once that an SCV finished making a barracks and then it just stayed in one spot.

Not sure if you know that. Don't want to step on your toes if you already know all of this stuff. I don't know how much you already know about this game.
