I'm on the fence about this game. I'm probably about half way through.

I like that it's unforgiving but I hate why it's unforgiving sometimes. The targeting system is awful and I've died countless times and lost thousands of souls because of this. Also, I'm not sure why there isn't a fighting game made where you can control whether you move forward when you strike. I guess it's a function of which weapon you use but with the battle axe you always move forward when you attack making areas like 3-2 a total nightmare. The camera has also caused me to die several times. I really don't mind difficulty and unforgiving games, but when I die due to bad implementation it's terribly frustrating.

Overall I think hardcore RPG fans will appreciate this. Some of the bosses are actually fairly easy (and thank God for that because you generally have to run through 20-30 minutes of crap just to attempt the boss) but overall the game is pretty difficult.

Fwiw if you haven't delved into this game yet and want to, I'd highly recommend that you read spoilers on best weapons... because there is a finite supply of material for upgrades available and by the time you learn that it's generally too late.

2 pages for this random-ass game? Good eh?

The reason I've never heard of it, is because it's not for PC

So, I've been playing the game 8+ hours so far as a hunter, thought the bow would be fun. I have yet to beat Phalanx after three tries. Is it worth restarting entirely as a Royalty class now? I'm having to farm the level multiple times to have plenty of firebombs and turpentine for the Phalanx fight.

The rest of the game is the same way.

I'm just getting the impression from the thread that Royalty makes the initial curve a touch easier. Of course, if I picked up a game to be easy, I got the wrong one here

I should say, I could very likely just be Doing it Wrong and have to learn more before I consider changes classes.

dude, phalanx is super easy, if you have the firebombs and turpentine, its ridiculous. Just move around a ton, go behind the columns and use the herb to revive yourself, go back to pwning blobs with fire.

This statement makes me scared

How many firebombs did you use in the fight with him, out of curiosity?

oh you probably need 10 or so, but if you have a lot of turpentine you are good too. Just go around picking off the small blobs. After you have killed 15 or so, just hit the big one from the back. he's slow so you can get behind him easy. With turpentine on your weapon you should be able to three hit the blobs.

This is exactly what I did (except I'd already beat Phalanx). I went back and, as royalty, completed the same run in 1/4 the time.

This doesn't work for me it just sends the spell out of my left hand.

Anyone help with a magic weapon? I feel dumb.

did you not equip the wooden catalyst? You need to have that armed to cast magic.

Yes I have the wooden catalyst in my left hand and the sword I want to enchant in my right hand. When I hit L1, I just fire a spell with my left hand, I don't enchant the weapon.

You can do phalanx without turpentine or firebombs... just remember the little mini-phalanx's are vulnerable from the back and eventually they will detach from the main phalanx.

Are you sure you have the right spell selected ("up" section of the d-pad HUD)? If not, that is likely your issue.

Bumping this thread because this game is awesome.

Interested to see if anyone is still playing this game through NG+.

I don't know if I'm going to bother with NG+. I'm almost finished with the first play through and I don't think I want to do all the grinding to get the rest of the trophies.

Tip for beating the Red Eye Knight in level 1:

Spoiler:

Don't fight him straight up. Lure him back into the area with all the catapult / trebuchets. One of the trebuchets is positioned in the middle of the walkway, allowing for full movement around all sides of it (I believe it's the third from the doorway leading to the red eye knight).

Take position on the other side of it and make sure to stay on the side opposite the red eye knight as he tries to move around it to get to you. Be careful not to get too close on the other side as he does have a lunge move and can still hit you, even if the trebuchet is directly between the two of you.

From here you have two options:

a) Wait him out. He will eventually tire of chasing you around the trebuchet and will leave to go back to his original spot. Once he begins to walk away, you can run up behind him and land a critical hit. Rinse, repeat until dead. Takes 15-20 minutes, but works.

b) Lure him into making one of those spear lunges by getting close to him on the opposite side of the trebuchet. When he starts to charge, back up to where he can't hit you and then pop him with magic / firebomb / arrow. The timing is important because when he lunges, his shield is down, allowing for much greater damage. Start to cast / throw / shoot when you hear his charge sound. This is considerably quicker, once you figure out how to lure him into a spear lunge.

I read a review about that game and I heard that it is one of the most difficult games in game history .. is it true?

No. It's reminiscent of the old Mario games. You die a lot learning the level and then you pwn.

Not the most difficult, just unforgiving, and the problem is most gamers are used to games being very forgiving nowadays, with save points every two steps. I think I said upthread that the gameplay reminded me very much of Maximo for the PS2, which was an ancestor of the old Ghouls and Ghosts games, which was one of the most difficult games of its time.

As for the Red Eye Knight, btw...there's a MUCH easier way to kill him:

Spoiler:
Wait until you level up enough to have magic spells. You'll have to beat Phalanx in 1-1 before you can start acquiring magic spells. The first catalyst in the game is a wooden one that is on top of one of the towers in 1-2 along the bridge immediately after Phalanx. You will also want to equip the Thief's Ring.

Once you have the catalyst, go learn either basic offensive spell. The Soul Arrow is probably the best choice because of world 2-1. I ground enough to get the Flame spell as well.

Once you have one of those spells, walk up to the spot where the red eye knight stands, but do so very slowly. Try to lock onto him. If you can't very slowly take another step forward until you can. Then shoot one of the spells at him. He'll take a pile of damage and start chasing you. Turn around and sprint out to the spot where the trebuchets are. If you listen carefully, you'll hear the knights footsteps slow as he gives up and turns around to walk back to his spot. As soon as he stops chasing, you can turn around and walk up behind him again. As soon as you can lock on, shoot him again. Only takes four hits like this to kill him. Be careful how quickly you return for later shots, though, because if you don't let him walk far enough back and "think" you're completely gone, he'll heal himself up and you'll run out of MP before you kill him.

Also, only cast one spell at a time! As soon as the first one hits for big damage, he turns and raises his shield, which will effectively deflect any subsequent spells until he drops his guard again.

Just so everyone knows - there is no real point in killing the red knight in the beginning of the game besides satisfaction/exp.

The door behind him is locked and you won't be able to unlock it until much later.

Tbag's right. The only reason to kill him is that he is worth 2k souls, so it is good for early farming.

Not really true:

Spoiler:
The first time I played through I stood outside the room with the "named guy" trapped on the ledge (the guy with the ornate shield that you help/save in 1-1, 1-2, 1-3 etc). I ended up sniping him with magic thinking he was a sub-boss or something. I killed him and picked up the keys off his corpse. No reason to go beyond the locked door at a low level, but still...
