I was burned by the ladder change. I wonder how many people missed the first jump because of the change to clicking the left stick. I wasn't able to get online at first so I couldn't see the bloodstains.

You do find more torches. I haven't paid attention to the timer, but I think each torch adds five minutes to it.

Equip load ring is in:

Spoiler:
No Man's Wharf.

Spoiler:
I don't remember exactly. I think it was behind a false wall. You have to fight through a pack of about six of those long-armed monsters to get to it. Torches don't help with them when you try to get into that building. They go berserk and ignore the torch. There's a merchant there who sells a poise ring for 5,000 souls as well.

I just reached the bonfire there and haven't done anything yet. Also, what I'm doing against most bosses is to go against them as a spirit to see what they are good at and then fighting them with the help of spirits.

As far as I know, DEX hasn't changed from DS1. I'm just going with a strength build for now.

What's the difference between being summoned as a phantom and as a shade?

So what exactly am I missing not playing online? Is co-op necessary in some parts? I haven't used xbl in like 2 years.

the world is unknown. playing online allows you to see bloodstains (how/where people died), messages (tips) on the ground, and allows you to summon for help when you need it, or to assist someone else to bring you back to human form. being online is important for this game

So far just about every message I've seen on the ground is something along the lines of "hoorayyyy dark souls 2!!! i have no idea what im doing!!!"

No spoilers for me until after I've completed NG+ at least.

I'm going to beat the game on my own. There's no way I'll figure everything out on my own. Being a little lost is part of the game.

Important tip regarding the merchant there:

Spoiler:
He'll buy your junk gear, but it's a one time thing. He disappears after the first time you speak to him. I didn't find out until after I visited him. I didn't sell him anything, either.

Anyone playing on xbox? The damn server has been down every time I try to play. Offline mode just not the same experience.

I think a shade disappears after a few enemies and you get a silky smooth object, phantom you have to stay around until a boss is defeated and you get that other thing which lets you join a different covenant (Blue Sentinels) if you've done it once. Not sure what the point of having multiple of them are.

I often see a shade and a phantom being summoned for boss fights.
