Ok, got the game. Absolutely beautiful. Actually decent story in what little I've done thus far as well.

Can anyone give a little hint as to what to do? I've:

Spoiler:
I've got up and died x100 in the graveyard and down and died x100 with the ghosts. I've managed to kill a few ghosts with the Trasiant Curse, but there are just too many inside the buildings

What do do....

Spoiler:
There's a post on Kotaku saying to go up, not down when you get to that area, and to fight through the skeletons. I was trying to do that last night and dying a lot anyway...but yeah, the ghosts are just too plentiful. Might have to go down far enough to farm souls and then back up to get some equipment when you go up to fight the skeletons...maybe. Don't hold me to that last part.

Spoiler:
Undead Burg/Undead Parish should be the first place you go from the tutorial. Anywhere else you have no chance. It's to the right somewhere up some stairs from the first bonfire.

Yep, found it

Spoiler:
I'd gone literally every direction but up the staircase to the UDB. No idea how I missed it so many times. I managed to kill a ton of the ghosts and get their special dagger, so it wasn't a total loss.

I started with Knight and I'm currently leveling up Strength, Endurance, and Dexterity so I can use the Black Knight Sword. I'm trying to avoid using magic and miracles my first play through.

Oh, and to anyone thinking about getting the official strategy guide, DO IT. It will be weeks if not months before a good wiki is organized and the official guide literally has every single detail you would ever want about maps, enemies, weapons, items. It literally has everything. And it's hardcover and looks really nice.

I am a pyromancers leveling up VIT/STR/END/DEX/INT pretty evenly or at least trying to. Not paying too much attention to the other stats.

Actually secret in this spoiler involving a hidden powerful weapon near the beginning of the game:
Spoiler:
Did anyone else get the Drake Sword from the dragon yet? Shoot his tail with a bow and arrow about 20-25 times and it gives you a bad ass sword.

ugh, whats the point of playing a game, especially a game like this, with a guide?

I prefer:

Playthrough 1- No guide.

Playthrough 2 thru 5 - Guide.

Anyone who got a platinum on Demon's Souls without a guide was less of a man and more of a God. I'm hoping Dark Souls will be the same.

I really want to get this game, but I have some questions for those in the know.

Background:I’m all for frustrating video games (I played Meatboy for at least 50+ hours) and passed Alien Hominid and Contra and all those so-called hard games. I’m a fan of RPG and dark-fantasy-ish stuff if it's done well (like Thief).

Question: So I think I’m a perfect candidate for this game but one type of frustration I really can’t tolerate is the kind where you’re doing monotonous **** all over again for like the 100th time, monotonous **** like hiking up the same hill and going through other tedious motions.

I’m comfortable tackling a boss 50-100+ times or becoming addicted to coin/soul collecting if it’s aesthetically pleasing, if that’s what it takes. But I don’t like pointless drudgery in a video game.

Will I:

regret the purchase?

OR

geek out in the wilderness?

Geek out. Basically, the game rewards patience as well as adaptation. You have to learn, but if you don't just run in every time and try to evaluate afterwards, you'll do better.

Anyways, I'd just play the first one and then decide.

I haven't played Dark Souls, only Demon's Souls so this is based on what I've read but I think you'd enjoy Dark Souls more than Demon's Souls. In Demon's Souls when you died you had to do the entire level again, which sometimes included 5 or 10 minutes of not-that-difficult gameplay. You're never just walking but not all enemies were equally deadly.

In Dark Souls I think there is a new save/checkpoint system where you have spots in the level at which you can save. So now if you die you will spawn much closer to where you died. This allows them to make the game even harder because you don't have to repeat the entire level just to get to the end-boss for the Xth time.

indeed.. although there is something satisfying about going back through the level and destroying those enemies that were "oh so hard" an hour ago..

This game is 100% awesome and anyone on the fence about buying it would get a strong "do it" from me.

Here is a list of bosses I've defeated so far:

Spoiler:
Asylum Demon
Taurus Demon
Bell Gargoyles
Capra Demon
Gaping Dragon

working on Moonlight Butterfly right now

This is by far GOTY thus far for me. Whether it will hold there once the holiday releases hit, I'm not sure.

Pure white world tendency in Demon's Souls until the 17th (where I assume it'll change to pure black)

Gives me something to do while I wait for the postman to bring me Dark Souls.

I've already put in 16 hours without playing any today. This game requires you to take a break for a day or two so you can gather your strength for the hard uphill climb this game is. Dark Souls might be greatest of all time game for me after all is said and done.

Anyone have a class recommendation for someone new to series? Just picked the game up last night, and started off as a cleric because I heard how difficult the game was and figured the extra power could be useful. So far it's been ok, but I find myself getting owned a lot (obviously) if I engage more than 1 enemy at a time.

They nerfed ranged magic big time in Dark Souls compared to Demons' Souls. I would do Warrior or Knight and level your Strength and Endurance. If you get ambushed by several enemies, try to back up into a narrow area where they can't get behind you and just keep your shield up, attacking right after you block. Your stamina regenerates very, very slowly with your shield up, so remember to let it down when your stamina is depleted.

Also back stabs are super clutch when facing a powerful enemy one on one. Lock on, get very close and just keep circling them in one direction with your shield up. They will attack, and either you will block it or they will miss all together. Right after this let your shield down to increase your speed and keep circling closely in the same direction until you are directly behind them, then do weak attack. If you successfully do a back stab this will make them fall down, and sometimes you can back stab them repeatedly as soon as they get up if you can position yourself behind them as they rise. Daggers also have a huge damage bonus with back stabs.

They're all decent. Warrior is what I think most go with on their first playthrough. It's totally fluid though and in 10 levels or so you can basically have completely respec-ed your guy.
