However, I seem to suck at it pretty badly. I started on easy and was able to do pretty well with Poland so I moved up to normal and have been having trouble. Any strategy guides out there or tips others have?

This game seams a lot like the old Koei "romance of the three kings" games. Where managing people is more important than anything else in the game. In some way this is the most realistic of grand strategy games since in real life you can't micromanage every battle and village in any large nation.
