Next Gen Console, PC, and Mac Release Targeted for Early 2012

Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO).

Targeted for release via Playstation Network, Xbox Live Arcade, and Steam (for PC and Mac) in early 2012, CS: GO will expand upon the team-based action gameplay that it pioneered when it was launched exactly 12 years ago (CS beta 1, August 1999).

CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons and delivers updated versions of the classic CS content (de_dust, etc.). In addition, CS: GO will introduce new gameplay modes, matchmaking, leader boards, and more.

"Counter-Strike took the gaming industry by surprise when the unlikely MOD became the most played online PC action game in the world almost immediately after its release in August 1999," said Doug Lombardi at Valve. "For the past 12 years, it has continued to be one of the most-played games in the world, headline competitive gaming tournaments and selling over 25 million units worldwide across the franchise. CS: GO promises to expand on CS' award-winning gameplay and deliver it to gamers on the PC as well as the next gen consoles and the Mac."

CS: GO is being developed by Valve in cooperation with Seattle-based Hidden Path Entertainment. The title is targeted for release in early 2012 and will be playable at this year's PAX Prime and Eurogamer Expo 2011.

Seems like the perfect game to be free to play. Hopefully it is and starts a trend on consoles.

I'm curious whether this release is aimed at the existing CS market, or if they expect to compete with MW3 and BF3.

If it's the latter, does anyone think it can steal market share from EA and Activision? I'm talking about new players, not former CS players who played the other two to fill a void.

I'm curious because CS obviously has momentum from its reputation and impact on the genre. But, and I could be wrong, it sounds like the game won't be as bright and shiny as BF3 or MW3.

Willy, to be honest I think it may have a shot. Heck, being an ex semi-pro Halo/Cod player, I bought CSS just because I heard only good things about it. If CS moves to the xbox, peopel are for sure going to give it a shot. I don't think I've ever heard anyone talk abd about a Counter-Strike game.

I haven't either. But I'm wondering more about the people who have never heard of Counter-Strike, or don't have the appreciation required to get them past the lack of cutting edge graphics and fancy bells and whistles.

I really hope all three are good. That would be great for us.

Also: Is it fun? More specifically, is it fun for CS noobs?

i heard it was made for team based play, which is the main reason cs was what it was. for those who are familiar with it, 1.6 >>>>> cz >> source, and tbh no other game has the team dynamic of cs.

promod was supposed to be the new 1.6, lets see if this can do better

weak.

im sure they'll be upgraded, but i'm not expecting top of the line stuff. cs was never really about the graphics, like someone said above it's all about team play etc.

"CS: GO features new maps, characters, and weapons ......" - Hmmm, interesting. I really hope they include the well known and used weapons of CS:S - Deagle, AK, M4, Awp, and several others ... And will also be interesting to see if they readjust the Deagle's aim in this new game - restoring it to it's original status (when the game was released).

I'm excited for this, as a platform only player I've never played the newer counter strike games but definitely appreciate playability over graphics. I'll probably buy it when it comes out mostly because I haven't heard too many things about the game until recently.

...They’re going to be demoing their new game at PAX, and at Eurogamer Expo next month. Not only that, but if you turn up to give it a try, you’ll get given a key for the beta.

FUUUUUUU I want beta keyyyyyy

Releasing old content right away will be the death of this game. It will be stagnent before it even gets out of the gate. That said, if a competitive scene springs up, it WILL stay alive, but i think it has been too long since 1.6 was out, and source was a bit of a failure in this regard, even with all the money that was injected into it.

Joke this isn't released on Xbox from what i'm reading. Loved this game when I was ~10 even looking back now it was just so pure and simple from my vague memory I played a variation of Search and Destroy it was boss. #nostalgia

Being a ex-competitive CS player. I cannot wait until the beta gets released for this. Hopefully my connections will allow me to get some early action. 1.6 and source are the pinnacle of competitive FPS gaming. The individual and team chemistry that is required cannot be found in any of the modern FPS games like BF/CoD because they cater way too much to casual FPS players. When I mean casual FPS players, I am also including people who play BF/CoD 40 hours a week, because lets face it...all they do is join a game and play. I remember spending hours going over strategies and positions on every single map with my team. To me, CS players:BF/CoD players as Poker Pros:OMG I HAZ POCKET ACES AND LOST. We are just a completely different level. I could probably join a CoD server right now and have at least a 2:1 KD. I doubt a CoD player could join a server full of CS pub scrubs and get a single kill.

Queue the Quake players

not sure how well this will go EVEN if it's a good game

-it can be the greatest game ever made, old school 1.6 players will still say it sucks because 1.6 fanbase is like the biggest crowd of elitist jerks
-modern fps gamers will not care because it's not cod or whatever
