How many versions of Civ until the AI doesn't get headstart bonuses at immortal/deity skill levels but instead just gets better at playing?

Chess is 8x8, now look at how many tiles there is on a Civ map. The gametree would be way too complex.

In other areas Civ is only superfically complex, once you've done the math you realize that you only got an illusion of choice and most of the time there is one clear optimal build/techpath. So I'd prefer if they'd balance the game better, much like the NQ-Mod did.

The breakthrough in chess AI was being able to evaluate the gamestate in small areas of the board. There's no reason a Civ AI couldn't do something along those lines too - even if you only look at the 8x8 nearby at the start, and use a looser algorithm as you get to larger scales.

Well, Civ isn't chess. Your average Civ player is making thousands of small mistakes every playthrough, where as in chess you can only make 1 mistake per move and maybe 30 mistakes in a game.

The point being, a mistake in chess is magnitudes more punishing. A very strong Civ AI doesn't have to be perfect, just better than most humans.

Chess isn't a divide and conquer problem, but I guess the breakthrough you are talking about is beating your average person ?

That being said, Civ certainly would be one of the "easier" games to beat for an AI, but we are still very far away from that.

Something something Skynet.

Basically, if the AI played BETTER, you would probably never play higher difficulty Civilization. You would simply always lose.

Civ is not chess. Different civs have different strengths, and the randomly generated maps can be great for you or tough for you depending on resources available.

Imagine if the AI used all the bull****tery that humans currently use to win on Deity, or even if the AI simply KNEW about it.

Imagine diplomacy if every AI was truly out to win the game and truly knew the consequences of their decisions. Why, yes, Mr. Player, you can have my Iron to upgrade your fleet of Galleas into Frigates for the low low price of ELEVENTY MILLION GOLD -- and your 2nd and 3rd largest cities.

Cliffs: It'll never happen. If you want brutal defeat at the hands of intelligent opponents, you need to get into Multiplayer Civ.

I've been playing lately with the Community balance patch. It's a compilation of mods that rework the happiness system and changes almost every Civ's unique abilities, units, and buildings. Also tweaks the AI so it's not as bad. I like it but it's hard to win without a bit of war.

I liked it, but the game kept crashing after a while. The community UI patch is 100% get for everyone though.

After watching some of Quill18's new series I'm actually sort of looking forward to 6, which I would have thought impossible given how much I dislike 5.
