Lets say I am 18 years old. I play halo 3 10 hours a day against the toughest competition can I be a halo pro eventually?

I mean this for anyone. Take anyone in the world with normal health can anyone if they play halo 3 10 hours a day vs the toughest competition eventually be a halo pro?

Basically what I am asking is professional gaming like professional basketball? Like if you dont have the talent you cant make it. This true for gaming?

You still need fast reflexes, so no matter how much you play against great competition, if you dont have it, you dont have it.

Cant you do some training for such things?

Video games: This may sound stupid but can actually be quite important fast paced video games are known to increase hand-eye coordination (Doctors have been known to recommend video games to people with bad hand-to-eye coordination

If you put time and effort into it and get a solid team together anything is possible. Back in '06 I teamed with a bunch of locals and we went to MLG Meadowlands for Halo 2. It was my first event and I placed top 48 in FFA and our team was 1 series away from pro bracket. I played a lot of customs with good people and got a team together for Orlando the next year and placed 15th. It's all about getting your name out there, playing customs, playing MLG and getting noticed.

There are plenty of people who play halo for 10+ hours a day. Granted maybe not against the toughest competition. I would say it definitely takes a bit more than just grinding it out. That goes for pretty much any video game at the top levels that I can think of that have some sort of e-sports community.

having a good team is way more important than praticiing 10 hours a day

As Sklansky would say, it is possible for most people to become very good at most things if they're willing to put in the time. However, without an innate ability, you can probably never become world class.

Now obviously for something like poker you don't need to be anywhere near world class to make money. I have no idea how making money from Halo competitions works, but I'd imagine the window is quite small, closer to something like the MLB than professional poker.

There are many competitions for Halo. The biggest one is MLG, there are a lot of local tournaments around my house that have $80 team tournaments and top 3 get paid, usually around 20 teams show up so first place gets around $1000. MLG tournaments are a bigger deal, around 200 teams in the open bracket and then there is the pro bracket which includes teams that have enough points to get a bye on the open bracket. Only the top 8 teams get prize money in MLG but the money is pretty big, there is usually 6 tournaments and then the Las Vegas Championship. 1st place usually gets around $100,000 but the chances of making top 8 are very very very slim. The very good players also have MLG contracts for $1,000,000 and I'm sure most of you guys have seen "T2" on the Dr. Pepper bottles.

There isn't enough money in pro gaming outside of Korea, and even then the competition is insane.

Gl giving yourself RSI when you could make more money/year by working at mcdonalds 30hrs a week.

As long as you have a brain and decent reflexes, yes.

edit: obv you need other people exactly like this to make the team

Some people have it, some people don't imo. If my wife tried to play it 16 hours a day for a year, she still couldn't compete at MLG level. You can get very very good, and possibly get to be a 50 in MLG or whatever is toughest, but you'll never be the best if you don't have very good innate ability imo.

In 'Outliers' Malcolm Gladwell claims that it takes 10,000 hours to become truly expert-level in anything.

Yeah but they dont have the desire to be any good. They may want to be good but without an effort to be good you wont be good. I am saying someone with the desire and passion and motivation to do everything in his power to succeed. I am talking about that person.

because no matter how much you practice, you will never be ass good as Roger Federer in tennis, or Phil Ivey in poker

why?

cause they are just better than you.

in life, ppl are better than you at Halo 3, no matter how much you practice.

See my problem with what you say is you put a limit on what can be done with what has been done. If we as humans used that type of thinking we wouldnt evolve and we would never progress. We would be the same or worse. Thats just not very effective thinking. I say you set your own limits on how good you can be. Then worry about the rest later. I am not saying talent doesn't matter but there are many other things that are way more important than talent.

if at the age of 6, you gave 100 kids tennis racquets, and made them play 10 hours a day, 6 days a week, for their childhood, are you saying all 100 would be ranked in the top 100 17 years later?

no, they wouldn't, cause some ppl, no matter how much you train, will never be at an elite level.

i'm not saying no one can do it, i'm saying it's highly unlikely.

That would depend on many things. Can it be done? yes. Everytime? maybe not.

But thats not because its so impossible or anything. Its because other factors are at play. Illness, death. Lack of interest. You cant teach someone something they dont wanna learn its that simple. Are these kids midgets?

Just give me 100 normal children with normal athletic talent and I can make them them great. That is if they have the passion inside to get better. You have to like doing the work that is required to be elite. You like it cause you like being great. You like it cause you want to be the best. You love being the best so you love working hard.

i would say with training yes, because the skills needed like reflexes can be improved through training and any sort of strategy can be taught fairly quickly. Most games are really repetitive aswell so i doubt it would take long. Hypothetically i would bet my entire net worth that i could be pro level within 6 months at any game if someone let me join their team and trained me.

The reason why people dont succeed at basketball or other sports is because of physical attributes and lack of motivation at a young age.

I'll take that bet for 10k or less.

You can't really say "hypothetically" and "I would bet" in the same sentence. Football is a game. Would you bet your entire net worth that you could train for 6 months and be part of a team that beats the Steelers?

Say you got some insane coaching and played 10 hours a day for 6 months - do you think you'd be able to sit and win in Bobby's room? This one is easy because your net worth is built in to the task.
