Wonder if they'll do a Bloodbourne PS4 package. With those do you end up getting a discount or is it the same cost as system+ game just in one box?

Edit: still mad they moved away from a game coming with the system. If the NES could include SMB, every other system can include something too.

Spoiler:
Dagnabit.

So I'm probably gonna buy a PS4 for this, but I need at least 2 or 3 more killer exclusives before I do. What's only coming out on the PS4 (or more appropriately, not coming out on PC) that I should look out for. It's just wrong to pay $460 for one game.

Does exclusive mean exclusive forever? Or will this likely get to PC eventually?

Financially it makes sense, the PC version of Dark Souls 2 sold the most of any platform*, and I believe they're using a modified version of the DkS2 engine. Then again, Sony seems to hold on to their exclusives pretty tightly. A PC version of TLoU would be hugely profitable, but it seems they're more interested in potential profit coming from console sales to PC players. You'd think that has to still be a pretty big financial mistake, but who knows.

I'm interested to see where they go with Playstation Now with other platforms. I'd pay $15/mo to have Netflix like access to streaming games if they added PS4 titles along with the older stuff. At the moment they've only said they're bringing it to their Sony Bravia TVs and Xperia tablets along with the PS3/4 and Vita. This article is the only place I could find this, but they quote Sony saying
Quote:
eventually PS Now will expand beyond PlayStation platforms and Sony devices, allowing users to stream PlayStation games on numerous other internet-connected devices
I'm still on the fence about a PS4, haven't owned a console since the N64, but if PS Now comes to PC with access to Bloodborne in a few years I'm fine waiting.

* Not sure if still true, but a month after the PC version came out the PC in game death counter was over half of the global death counter on the DkS2 website, and the XBox and PS3 versinos had been out for a month prior to PC release.

Obviously PC players just suck and die more.

Anyone think there will be decent Black Friday deals on PS4 or is it still too early in the system's life cycle? I got a black Xbox 360 bundle in 2011 at a price point that it didn't really even hit until after the next gen came out last year - it was actually cheaper than buying the top bundle at Best Buy right now.

For all you Souls fans

It turns out that Sony has a Bloodborne alpha planned for North America after all. This morning, invites went out for Sony Computer Entertainment European territories, and invites confirming North American participants will go out later today.

A representative from Sony Computer Entertainment America verified the news to Destructoid and elaborated on how the process works. In North America, participants were pre-selected based on eligibility. This necessitated PlayStation 4 ownership and a specific Trophy requirement across Demon's Souls, Dark Souls, and/or Dark Souls II on PS3.

For anyone who doesn't make the cut, but is hoping to get in anyway -- sorry, no such luck. SCEA stressed that the North American Bloodborne alpha is strictly a development tool and is not intended to promote the game. As such, it's not open to the public, and any requests beyond those that are pre-selected will not be fulfilled.

The most interesting part to me:

*The absence of a shield is highly disconcerting for a player like me, who played all of the Souls series with L1 held up 90% of the time. Out of trepidation, I would accidentally click L1 only to find a more aggressive stance my character had taken. If that’s not a way to spite the reluctant and risk-averse players – who have maybe cheesed/shielded their way through the Souls series – I don’t know what is. It is a clear message from the makers: The risks are high here and so are the rewards. Which brings us to the most revolutionary mechanic Bloodborne employs.

*I call it the “courage counter”. Every time your character gets hit,a fraction of theirmaximum HP (denoted by the red bar) is lost, but a part of that lost HP is still hanging in the balance to be claimed back (denoted through a lighter shade of red). You can only reclaim that lost HP if you choose to hit the enemy reactively within the next few seconds, otherwise it is lost forever. It is a highly risky tactic that rarely led me to the most favorable results. I was either able to recover a miniscule amount of HP or I died horribly in my greed to maximize the returns, hacking and slashing mindlessly towards zero stamina, only to be bludgeoned/shot/slashed/pierced to death. But there is something deeply psychological about this mechanic. Not only is the game suggesting that you react to enemy hits and not wait it out, it is slowly punishing you for not doing so, by taking away the HP that could have been yours. So the evergreen strategy of a Souls player – to take the hit, retreat with the shield up, take an Estus swig, fight back – is thrown out the window from the get go. And due to this simple-yet-twisted take on battle, Bloodborne seems like its own game.

Meh I'm honestly not feeling that at all.

One of my favorite parts of the Souls games has been going through as a straight tank, straight rolling and dodging, and straight magic. It really added to they replayability as all three loadouts played very different.

Still have full faith and will be getting day 1 but not really a fan of this decision atm.

They've added a new feature, separate from the campaign, called the chalice dungeon. It's procedurally generated dungeons that you can play solo or co-op. Dungeons can also be shared. Amazing.

FYI I'm planning on getting a ps4 pretty much exclusively for this game (as I expect others may too) so if anyone comes across especially good deals or pre-orders or whatever you should post em here!

-Over 10 maps in the world Each map is unique with it's own "situation."
-The Chalice dungeon is a multi-layered map located in the world's dungeon
-Procedurally generated, but massive, spanning the entire underground of the city
-Each area in the underground has an holy chalice, finding that allows you to break the seal and access another section.
-By multi-layer, that means there are three layers to present different surprises and traps to widen the game's strategy.
-After generating your dungeon through the Holy Chalice ritual, it stays fixed. That allows players the opportunity to master each dungeon while still providing "fresh and interesting" experiences.
-Assume the difficulty level of the dungeons is high. They won't be easy to breeze through.
-Like Demon's Souls, the focus on is on the sense of accomplishment and achievement after clearing a dungeon.
-Increase the scale of sharing. Players will be able to share generated dungoesn and the methods they used to complete them. You can narrow those down to specific communities or just a close group of friends.
-The Chalice Dungeon isn't tied into the main story; it's optional. Comparing it to Demon's/Dark Souls.
Quote:
-Character customization will be about on level with Dark Souls II, but there will also be some unique features. As an action-RPG, it'll have everything "to be expected from an RPG."
-The team is working to keep the game running at the highest frame rate they can, and the final specifications will depend on what works best for the experience.
-There is PvP in the game.
-There might be something along the lines of the fight in Dark Souls II where you took on the role of a boss and fought against another player.
-The concept of dying and Hollowing from Demon's/Dark Souls will exist in some form in Bloodborne as well.
-The dungeon you saw during the keynote was made for the presentation; the actual dungeons will be much larger and more complex.
-The boss characters are also part of the randomly generated element.

The first eighteen minutes.

The video is mostly the same area that's been shown already plus the nexus/hub. The NPCs are in now and you can see some of the stat and inventory screens.

The embargo lifts on Monday the 16th.

There are new PvP and co-op mechanics. Here's the gist:

There are no longer summon signs. You ring a bell in your inventory ("beckoning bell," I believe) to signal that you want someone to enter your world for co-op. If you are looking to enter someone else's world for co-op, you ring a different bell.

Ringing the beckoning bell also causes the bell maiden to spawn somewhere in your world. The bell maiden's existence makes you open to invasion. Finding and killing the bell maiden ends the possibility of invasion. Co-op partners now enter the world in a completely random location, rather than always right where you summon. Invaders also enter the world in a completely random location. From what I understand, you will no longer receive a message indicating that you have been invaded.

I don't know the exact details regarding how to invade, etc. but this race to kill the bell maiden mechanic sounds pretty incredible. The tension is going to be through the roof.

Also, some areas have a bell maiden already there when you enter and you can create a password to use for easy co-oping with your friends.

Edge preview is out today. I found a post with some details.

Quote:
Playthrough did not involve Chalice Dungeon or multiplayer.

This is not an official review/no score, despite the cover of the game saying "THE VERDICT"

"Bloodborne is Hidetaka Miyazaki's brutal riposte to the section of his playerbase that thinks it has seen it all before."

Merchant sells a clip-on lantern (hello Demon's Souls augite).

"Yharnam spends the game in the grip of a perpetual night...that can only be brought to an end by the player finding and finishing off the source of the scourge of beasts." (this could be referring short term like...defeat a major boss, get some daytime, or overall, I guess)

Description on the first shield they found: Shields are nice, but not if they engender passivity.

Some enemies in the game can use spells

Confirmed Bloodtinge stat governs bullet damage

Transforming strikes and their follow-up attacks give you a way of reaching enemies that in other Souls games might be out of reach because they were pushed back by your earlier attacks - they say stamina management is a more diverse process in Bloodborne than in the earlier games

Clothes found in the world or from a merchant whose catalog expands when you defeat bosses

Bloodstone shards = titanite, coldblood = portable souls, most common items are blood vials (healing) and quicksilver bullets, but stocks can grow low later in the game
Surplus items are automatically sent to a storage box, and if you die your items are replenished from the box automatically

They say your starting stats are dictated by the trick weapon you choose, which runs counter to the origins shown in the character creator...

Only found 6 or so weapons and 6 or so guns in 40 hours

Very few chests, almost all have something good inside

Enemies only drop upgrade mats and items

Bloodgems are an upgrade item that allows you to change the attributes of a weapon, ex. increasing physical attack power, adding poison damage, or increasing scaling - all the weapons in the game are customizable with bloodgems

Did not beat the game but they feel like it is less replayable than its predecessors (this does not count the Chalice Dungeon or multiplayer components)

You can keep up to 5 dungeon configurations in your Chalice Dungeon stock

Lantern checkpoints are not "overabundant" like the bonfires of Dark Souls II, you open shortcuts rather than getting new bonfires (ala Demon's Souls), interconnectivity approaches Firelink Shrine type numbers of access and departure points in a few places

"Discrete areas flow together to create a believable world" - separating the hub from the main gameworld allows the world itself to be more coherent

They say in Souls you are frequently scared of dying, but in Bloodborne you are also scared of what is coming to kill you - "There is a moment in Dark Souls that we will never forget: down in the Depths, picking up an item from a corpse and a slime dropping onto our head. We spent the rest of the level panning the camera endlessly for unseen threats, no longer scared of dying, but of moving. Imagine a whole game of that." - For this reason they think taking the replayability factor to CD makes more sense.

Torch may be very important for newcomers/first playthroughs

There is a new mechanic they are not allowed to discuss

"If you thought From Software was going soft, Hidetaka Miyazaki is about to put you brutally back in your place. And if you've been watching this generation from the sidelines, unmoved by the remasters and rush jobs while you wait for the first true essential to arrive, now's the time. As if there was ever any doubt, Miyazaki and his team have done it all over again."
