Re: Binding of Isaac game = like Zelda (nes) on crack.

Once I figured out how devil rooms works I don't remember taking anything from there. Maybe if I had spirit hearts to spare then I'd do it but otherwise it seems bad.

Depends on the items. Some aren't worth it, but some can be very powerful and pretty much impossible to get by normal channels.

I take brimstone every chance i can get, sometimes even if it puts me down to one heart (if I have a way to get extra spirit hearts).

There are some items that are almost never worth getting, and some that are situational based on how many hearts you have but never taking an item is -EV imo.

He also came up with the concept and designed the game and its mechanics. He's made flash games on his own before so I'm sure he did some programming for this one but creating a game is a big task so having someone share the workload makes sense.

Besides, lots of people can program a game. But coming up with a good game design that's also fresh and appeals to people, now that's hard.

Re: Binding of Isaac game = like Zelda (nes) on crack.

So I started a game as Cain and managed to luckbox a dollar out of an arcade machine on level 2.

I didn't find a SINGLE key until somewhere on level 4 but by then it was just too late. I managed to kill a miniboss in a side room and it dropped the goddamned steam sale (half off items from shop) I had 2 hearts and **** damage, so my 99 cents just went to waste. I'm sure the shops on each level were just filled with delicious 15c items that would have made me awesome.

My next game was a DPS powerhouse but one of the rooms was a really stupid layout with FOUR heart+mask mobs. I went from six hearts to dead because I was just gang raped by the masks without getting a clean shot on the hearts.

This game can be a sonofabitch.

Okay, there is such a thing as moving TOO fast. Just blew 9 hearts in a room filled with grandmother flies as Cain because my movespeed was absurdly high and it made dodging impossible.

I should be working. Good stopping point.

Re: Binding of Isaac game = like Zelda (nes) on crack.

Just won with Judas with the most ridic setup of all times...came within one hit of beating womb hitless (I assume that still counts for the hitless floor stuff even if you took hits on previous floors)

Maxed out most, quad shot+tooth and gigantic missiles+meatboy head a bunch of flies+homing shots and probably some other stuff i miss. A tooth I shot was about as big as monstro lol. Also battery with the starting book for good measure not that i needed it and switched to bible a level before mom.

4 hearts only though lol (and had two spirit hearts at most).

Also between Judas' starting book, necronomicon and unicorn horn we take necronomicon>judas book>unicorn right?

Re: Binding of Isaac game = like Zelda (nes) on crack.

I would put necro last of those 3, with unicorn being a bit better than the Book of Belial for the first few levels when you can just pretty much insta-destroy bosses with it, and the book being better in the endgame when the unicorn isn't as op.

Florian had no input in anything but programming. The whole game design is Edmund's work, not just the art or story. Every weapon, enemy, room layout etc, it's all his. Most programmers don't design anything. Just like Phil Fish didn't program Fez or Miyamoto didn't program Mario. Florian is pretty much a recluse that can't talk much English and plays TF2 all day. Not saying that's a bad thing but he's fine with it being "Edmund's game."

Fair enough. I agree with yours and Wolfram's point about good design being pretty rare, I just thought there was a good chance that there was a little more sharing of labor than public adoration suggested.

Re: Binding of Isaac game = like Zelda (nes) on crack.

Edmund is famous (they even made a movie about him) and nobody knows who the **** Florian is, so it's understandable that Edmund gets all the public credit.
