Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

I just got Arma II yesterday for the DayZ mod on Saturday.

For anyone interested there are a bunch of youtube videos but here's basically what it is:

It's a zombie survival multiplayer game, most servers have 50 players. Your character is consistent. If you die you lose everything you have and start back at the newbie starting spot. Its very much pvp, pve, etc. You can trust no one.

You start off with a ****ty handgun, a few magazines, a small bag, a can of food, some flares, and that's about it (maybe a few other small things).

You need to find better guns, a map, compass, ammo, food, water etc to survive. The zombies can hear and see, so you need to move really slowly around them or you risk drawing their attention and wasting all your ammo. As a result it's kind of a slowish game with very intense moments interspersed. Lots of running, though, from town to town - huge in game map, would probably take 4 hours to get from one end to the other, maybe longer IDK.

Really great idea, lots of flaws in it right now but there's an open alpha so if you can handle the STEEP learning curve it might be fun for you. I'm not quite decided on how I feel about the game yet.

Very demanding of computer power, graphics aren't great, lots of loading into the game type issues, long load times, counter intuitive interface, but they are patching it basically every few days with fixes and improving it.

You'd need to buy ARMA 2 and Operation Arrowhead, and then the DayZ Mod is a free download.

I'll try to answer any questions but I'm basically a giant noob. I have managed to stay alive for about 2 days at this point though, average life expectancy is 27 minutes (lol).

Re: Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

It looks really good. I would like to go out and play bandit to kill players and rob them of their things.

I've played some arma II and own 2 copies but don't have OA yet.
Been thinking of getting OA though to test it out.

Btw, I think I made a thread when ARMA II came out and I got 0 replies let's hope the zombie/survival topic yields better discussion!

The graphics are really good and the game engine has great realistic feel, because it's more like a war simulator than a COD like game, so no shiny things.
Even grass and trees move!1 Like you said, the game demands great deal of computing power, so anyone getting ARMA II better check the system requirements.

I tried it out last week as im as huge fan of everything involving zombies. But yes its Alpha and the controls are very very very confusing. But it has a lot of potential and the developers seem to know what they are doing and im gonna come back for sure. So lets keep this thread alive...

Re: Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

There were a bunch of people who I play EVE with who got into this game. I wanted to, but between practicing for the EVE alliance tournament, LoL, D3 and Dust 514 beta, I just don't have time to play this game. Maybe after the tournament I'll get into this and see what it's all about. My buddies really seem to enjoy this game.

Ya, I haven't played D3 since I got this game.

Dust 514 interests me but no PS3.

I'd definitely recommend watching the youtube videos for Day Z before buying the Arma package ($30 on steam). see if it's to your interest at all.

It's kind of similar to Eve in that it's very cut-throat, hardcore, no mercy from humanity. You are a target.

Maybe thread needs pics?

Survivor being chased by zombies...and maybe about to be sniped by another player

Survivor approaching another person's tent. You'll notice he's found some type of long gun (not sure if shotgun or rifle), and has acquired a bigger pack to store food/ammo in.

These five survivors have managed to rebuild a car by finding spare parts. It can be driven!

Cows can be killed and their meat used for food, as well as to restore health.

This guy found a crossbow and shot a zombie in the head with it!

Re: Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

just watched a few hours of one of the streams. The concept seems amazing, but I think I would get bored of it soon. There needs to be more objectives to the game or something.

I also see a lot of room for people to exploit the hell out of the game in its current state, so hopefully that is fixed.

I am interested in it though, will probably check it out as it gets more refined.

Regarding the boredom - you'd think that from watching the youtube videos, but when you're in that world, it's so not boring. just running through across a field is such a risky activity that it just isn't boring.

Re: Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

Nah, I totally get that, even from watching the streams. Often I was like "****in noobs, running over a ridge in the open like that is so stupid!!!" But I can see that getting old. With no real objective to clear other than just staying alive..... I would get bored often.

I love the concept of the game though. I think the devs are going in a really really good direction. I just think it somehow needs a little more. At least for me. Like, can you imagine having the ability to use world clues to track people (foot prints, twigs etc) Or some sort of hunger games style deathmatch. Just stuff like that. With no real time crunch, I see no reason to not just hunker down somewhere and ride it out..... which is just not that fun for me as a game, but gives me a solid northward stick in general, as I am a firm believer in the end of days

Also, a more in depth hunter/gathering interface would be fun i think. Maybe more stealth kill options as well..... Dunno, just rambling out loud.

I just see more potential to captivate the audience I suppose, but I also acknowledge that it is really just me, and the way I play games.

Did they lure you into a false sense of security or just ambush you!

Re: Arma 2 DayZ Mod (Zombie/Survival Multiplayer Open Alpha)

well, borntopun, it's funny, the guys i play with have a general they say all the time which is basically "kill players on sight" because everyone is such a **** in this game that its just too risky.

but of course, they made the exception, and so this guy killed 2 of them (lulled into false sense of security)

i lived (wasn't close to them) but as a result we had to raid a zombie-former-military camp to try to get some new gear for them...really popular spot for players. long story short, we weren't the only ones at the camp, pewpewpew, i killed one but then his 2 friends killed me good. (partially ambushed)
