This ring is the nuts... shoulda worn it. ALso, it's really bad to have a vulnerability to fire or cold like you had from the artifact ring of fire--you take extra danage from attacks of that element.

Sucks that you died. Elf 7 can get hairy and I often delay that level until I've cleared the main dungeon, Snake Pits and Vaults 1-7. You got quite far in the game, tho.

Use Putty to play on the public telnet server. You can manipulate the size of the Putty terminal.

You can hit Alt-Enter to send a cmd box to full screen. You can also change the font of a cmd box in the Properties, while running. I don't know how you can make it launch into a larger size by default however.

Elf is one of the end game branchs (it also is an optional branch). Remember earlier when people were talking about max level cahracters dying? The vault chamber of Elf is one of the places where this can happen fairly easily. Really the only reason to go into the Elven Halls at all is if you are ready to go into Zot, but just do not have the resistances you think you need in order to survive and you need to find better items. A general order of the game for me is something like Lair, Orc, (hopefully you have poison resistance), snake, swamp, vault (may want to put off vault 8, but it is easier then Elf) by the time you finish vault your character will probably be level 25+ assuming you don't get owned by a shadow dragon and lose a ton of experience. At this point you will also have the three easiest runes and you can decide what you want to do. If you have good gear, it is entirely possible to go for the win directly at this point. Most of the branches left in the game are very dangerous and will easily kill you if you don't know what to expect and don't have the right resistances to deal with what they throw at you.

MD have high natural magic resistance, so you probably don't need to wear that ring of magic resistance. For a lot of the end game walking around without Fire++ and Cold++ is almost suicidal depending on where you are you should be trying to get that as baseline. You can move gear around for the other resistances as needed. For example, you are going to want Life Protection maxed for Vault 8 because of the shadow dragons. Poison resistance is also by far the best resistance through much of the midgame and it also lets you eat poison corpses as food that won't make you sick, so it makes the food game much less tedious.

You need to be willing to alter your plans based on the gear you have found.

Also, 1 hander + shield is generally considered better for MDFi then a two handed weapon. The extra survivability from the shield will generally be more useful then the extra damage from a big weapon.

I'm sorry if this sounds like I'm telling you how you have to play because I'm not. I am just trying to explain what I think the easiest way to win is. If you want to try something different don't think that this is the only way to go about the game it is pretty flexible.

Looking at your character I have a couple more pointers. You should probably put your first couple stat points into intelligence, because it is possible to lose 7 intelligence instantly to certain effects in the game and if your intelligence falls to 0 it will be a death.

Watch your mutations as well. Screaming is a fairly bad mutation to have as you will get swarmed by monsters which is a fairly bad thing on the harder vaults in the game. It may be worth using a cure mutation potion to get rid of it if you ahve multiple availabe, if not just keep in mind that you have it and alter your play accordingly. Other mutations are bad as well such as the random teleport and map rot(annoying, but I think they took it out of the game in 3.4). Mutations have a tendancy to mess up your game and will be a key reason for deaths in the end game if you can't deal with them.

You also probably want to use your god abilities more often then you do. You want to get your invocation skill up to at least a level where you can reliably use Haste. Haste is ridicolously powerful. Might is also pretty powerful and you can use it for almost no cost. There is no reason why you shouldn't be using Might for almost every fight that even has a chance of causing a problem.

This thread has been awesome, thanks for the various comments.

I'm liking Crawl a lot. I still have a soft spot for ADOM (and if anybody feels like getting into that one and wants some tips, let me know), but this is a nice change of pace.

I get a popup that says "This system does not support fullscreen mode" when I do ALT-ENTER. It AIN'T my system, I've got an nVidia 8800 card in this rig. I ALT-ENTER stuff to full screen all the time.

Thx anyway for the advice, still stumped. Prob have to change the "Compatibility Mode" or something thru the Properties screen but I never bother to try to deal with all that crap. Legacy programs suck (except this one haha).

I'm reading the Crawl manual and I'm floored. It sounds so much superior to NetHack. I especially enjoyed the description of their design goals. I want to dive right in. But I decided I wanted to give tiled-mode a go before getting myself "married" to ascii mode forever, as I've done with NetHack. Except I can't figure out how to turn it on?

I agree with what you wrote. Once I deciphered what was going on in this thread, I realized Crawl is like NetHack on steroids. LOL

So I didn't do it yet... but I went here and this page describes all the steps...

http://crawl.akrasiac.org/

Noobs like us are instructed "If all of that is gibberish to you, read this." That's where PuTTY is explained, etc. Personally I think I'll stick to the ASCII, I was honestly playing the original Hack (and Zork, those were the days) at MIT in the mid 80's, so that's pretty much what I'm used to. Not this tiled graphics stuff. Yuck. Some things should never change.

P.S. On that page linked above is a section called "Links", and the first one

http://www.digital-eel.com/13steps/

seems really good to read. That's where I realized Crawl is "enhanced" (like Wonder Bread I guess) NetHack. Just look at it!

But on NetHack, I think I can potentially be helpful:

There are a whole bunch of ways to ensure you have enough ways to identify. In order of usefulness:

Firstly, if you're a wizard, you can obviously start with a spellbook of identify which is a huge benefit.
Secondly, checking the prices of scrolls in shops can help since identify scrolls have a base cost of 20, while the next cheapest (light) has a base cost of 50. Any very cheap scrolls around 20 are going to be scrolls of identify.
Thirdly, identify scrolls are the most common, so if you've gone a while and collected a lot of scrolls but don't know which is identify, I think it's sometimes worth the risk of reading one of your most common scrolls (unlikely to be amnesia, therefore) and checking if it's identify.
Fourthly there are a bunch of obtuse ways to identify certain items; for example, all cloaks except a cloak of magic resistance automatically identify themselves when worn; thus you know what a cloak is when you wear it, and if it doesn't tell you, it must be magic resistance. Another example is boots - you can tell you've got fumble boots on when you keep falling over, levitation when you fly, jumping when you can #jump further, etc. You could drop spare rings down a sink and the message gives you a hint as to its identity too, or engraving with a wand often gives you a hint about its identity. Relying just on scrolls makes the game tougher.
Fifthly, thrones sometimes give out the equivalent of a blessed scroll of identify.

It's useful to know which corpses are harmless (the majority, though not overwhelmingly so) and early on - or until you get a large backup supply of food - I suggest just eating every corpse you find as long as you aren't already satiated. Obviously locating a ring of slow digestion deals with this problem instantly.

The 'real' way?!?! I have bones turned off since that rather defeats the point of the game in my view - if you're playing on an online server, that's ok, but playing offline makes it a far too easy way to complete the game. Also, if you've created a few characters who are close-ish to being strong enough to try and complete the game, why go and kill them off?

Pwnt... the problem was you had already been drained below 8 int and thus were exposed to instadeath. Stay out of Hell (and Pandemonium and the Tomb) for your first win.

I've never played a roguelike ever, but love dungeon crawlers. Should I start out with Crawl or Dwarf Fortress? Dwarf Fortress seems more like a sim game unless I'm missing something.

Dwarf Fortress is weird - it's kind of a sim game in the style and interface of a roguelike. The learning curve is pretty much vertical, though, so I suggest starting somewhere else!

If it makes you feel better Kurosh, I have played a lot of games of Crawl and have never managed a 15 rune win. I always manage to find a new way to kill myself whenever I start messing around with the hells and pandemonium. I have lost a lot of "winnable" characters in this manner.

As for the 8 Int thing, you need to use potions of restore abilities and royal jellies. Nothing should be able to take more then 7 in one affect, so if you drop below 7 you should probably use something to fix it. This is especially true in the hells where just being in the branch will expose you to random stat drains.

Yeah, it seems like you probably could have won. The reason for my comment is that in all of the other roguelikes I've seen it's common for people to play months before they win (if they ever do). So getting that close to winning in one of your first 20 or so games seems either like a) running really good, or b) game imbalance.

Also, as near as I can tell, there is mouse-based user interface functionality that is only available in the tiled version. Maybe you don't feel you use it, but just having the capability makes the tiled version indisputably superior IMO. Right now I only the mouse mouse for going across the level to the stairs, but still, right-clicking to zoom in on a portion of the offscreen map seems like it should be useful.

Yeah, at first I downloaded from 0.4.5 from http://****************/projects/crawl-ref/, and they only had one DL option, which apparently is an ascii only version. Then I stumbled across http://crawl.develz.org/trunk/ and got the 3-day-old "Tiles (non-debug, +wizmode) build".

Great game. Explore mode is amazing. Wish I'd stop playing terribly and letting myself get killed.

I'm playing the Stone Soup Tiles update of Crawl: http://enne.walker.googlepages.com/stonesouptiles

It's not so much the graphics that got me - I used to love MUDs, but learning the interface and the game. The Stone Soup version has alot of stuff including a built-in tutorial, a vastly more detailed in-game help menu, helpful bits about your options in each menu, etc.. It's making it a whole heck of alot easier to learn the game.

The non-stone soup version of crawl is no longer developed. The version that is played on CAO is Stone Soup 0.4.5 which should be the most recent version of the game.
As for gumpzilla, yeah MDFi is the easy mode of Crawl.
