posts so far seem to cater to the old school. keeping with the trend i'd like to nominate twisted metal 2, lara croft: tomb raider, Donkey Kong Country, SSBM 64, and Pokemon Red/Blue
edit: i would also like to veto Goldeneye 64- so unbalanced with the whole Oddjob thing.
Ya I'll veto Goldeneye as well because of reasons previously stated, it really doesn't hold up today and I think the reason it's looked upon so fondly is pure nostalgia (while that's true for a lot of these games, they also are still legitimately great games when you go back and play them today).
I'll second Donkey Kong Country. It's a fantastic 2D platformer with near perfect music.

anybody that played the game seriously , oddjob was not allowed !
I definitely nominate Pokemon red/blue, grand theft auto 3, metal gear solid 2, final fantasy 7, super mario 64, and halo as all games that did wonders for the generation when they were released.

do u mean second? cuz those games have been nominated already mang
I'll second Starcraft, Diablo 2, FF7, Chrono Trigger, and Earthbound.
I was actually considering nominating Jagged Alliance 2, but with the X-com recommendation above, I don't think we should have both. (I've never played x-com, but I know JA2 was almost the same)
I also think we should have a Fallout or TES game on the list, but I'm not sure which. Fallout 3? New Vegas? Morrowind?
How many can we nominate? Since there has been a lack of PC games, I have a ton: Planescape: Torment, Fallout 1, Fallout 2, Baldur's Gate 2+expansion, Deus Ex, System Shock 2, Star Control 2, Dragon Age, Mass Effect, Amnesia, The Void. If I can only nominate a few, I'd go with PS:T, Fallout 2, and Deus Ex.
Second Chrono Trigger, Link to the Past, Earthbound, Super Metroid
We would have to start over, but I think we should do something like each person gets 1 nomination and 5 seconds. This would limit the number of games, though it would make it very difficult to figure out what to nominate.
i think aging well should be a criteria because if a game isn't still fun today then that just means there are tons of better games that have come out since the games release.
It invented the modern MMORPG genre, it's got all kinds of great features that even all the newer MMOs lack like persistent player-owned architecture, and it's currently the longest continually running MMORPG of all time.
I don't care what else is on the list, as long as this holds top spot.
