Useful things for taking HEM notes
I'd be really interested to see what/how other people take HEM notes. Its not necessary to post obvious things like "I usually write 'station' if I see him call down 2nd pair". I've been trying to streamline my note-taking so that I can still play 9 tables and write succinct notes whenever possible.
Some simple ones of my own:
- I make a note when a passive player checks back hands w/ showdown value on the river, especially if he could have v-bet. This can give you a huge clues later on when you are facing a tough decisions on the river. Something like you have 65s on AJT65 and he min-raises your river v-bet; you might normally puzzle over whether you can profitably call, and then read your note and recall that you've seen him CB TPGK twice before so you know that's not in his range. I mean this is arguably a fold regardless of a note, but if you have the note you can't kid yourself in the heat of the moment.
- One of the more useful ones: always, always take a note if you see someone semi-bluffing a draw or just playing a draw aggressively. This makes all the difference on hands like KK on 865tt, villain raises c-bet do we jam?
- If I see a reg get it in preflop with something less than QQ+/AK then I make a note of what they got it in with and in what situation (against a fish, reg, etc.) and then assume that's the bottom of their range in that situation until shown otherwise. Ex: If I see a guy 4-bet shove JJ over a 3-bet when his MP open was raised by BTN, I can say pretty verifiably that this guy is getting it in with JJ in most scenarios. Now there is no question in my mind that getting it in pre with QQ against this guy is +EV (not that there was necessarily, but this could help a lot of you guys who get in 'tough spots' with QQ).
- If someone comments in the chat at you then its almost always a give-away to something about them. Ex: You get it in AK vs KK and spike the A on the river and some guy starts calling you an idiot, you know he's probably a regfish or a tilting reg just looking to berate (a decent reg knows its totally standard and isn't giving a thought to chat anyway). Either way, now you know more about him and can extract his manies easier
- Anytime something happens in a 3b pot. Tendencies in 3b pots make a big difference because there is a lot more at stake in them, and you don't want to be making mistakes because they are amplified due to lower spr.

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
The way ppl play draws and how they play in 3bet pots are very important things
Other than that I usually take notes when a player acts different from what I expected from them based on their basic stats

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
you can get a lot from bet sizing imo
quick way to note it is 2-3, 5-7, 12-17 on AJxxJ (borrowed from GCs vid). 2 into 3, 5 into 7, 12 into 17 but use the dash to make note taking quicker and easier to read

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
something related, its good to have hem showing the last 3 pots in each table, and you can scan any medium-big ones when you arent involved in a pot

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
I write the date of the note and I try to look at all showdown hands as much as possible when I am not in hands.
I make a note if they miss standard valuebets.
If they check/fold turn after cbetting and what kind of boards dry/wet
If there stubborn with marginal showdown value
If they flat AA/KK in mp, sb to induce squeeze, to 3 bet otb or co vs btn.
How they play draws IP/OOP
If they will bluff raise flops/turns on coordinated boards IP/OOP
If they make inbalanced plays like raising 882r
If they do not slow play
Bet sizing in certain spots I feel I can pick something up on in the future
Bet sizing and strategy of fish - which I feel is probably the most profitable notes for me
If I feel they are tough regs, they are paying attention and adjusting.
What I think of the player, and what I think they think of me
If they only flat pp in MP, if they only play broadways and pp in the bb.
How I feel I can exploit them
And probably a few more. Oh I also keep a note pad, where if I can't get to a note right away at the tables. I will jot it down to do later

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
Tendancies like check raising draws on flops or donking sets on wet boards are huge tells & barely anyone balances these lines. I like to note people that call two streets and then check shove the river. How villians play in 3bet pots is probably the most useful info, fit/fold, stacks off with tpgk (QJ on J72), shoves draws...
I've recently taken to color coding calling stations, aggro monkeys, and regs with tells. I often used to double barrel when a good card came and immediately realize the guy was a station and get pissed at myself. Or fold two pair to the aggro monkey on the turn because the board was scary.

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
Color coding wise i use
Red: Fish / Try to play with
Orange: Semi fish / Not a calling station as such just a bit spewy
Blue: Reg / Not necessarily a good play just try to avoid as they have somewhat TAGish stats
Baby Blue: Semi reg / TAGish stats but have a pretty big read on them.

Some reads I remember writing in the past few days
-Can't v-bet thin
-1/2 c-bet = air
-c-betting range = strong
-3-bet/fold from SB
-floats raises light
-can c/r dry boards for value
-3-bet range = polarized and strong
-can CB SD
-Will not bet missed draws
etc

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
fails at vbetting (does not bet for thin value)
lol top pair (does not fold bluffcatchers)
monkey imba pre + monkey imba post (very aggro pre or post, but unbalanced)
capable of snailing wet boards
fastplays draw
turn bets are strong
anything that helps rly

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
my color code system is:
Green = Passive/station/loose pre. If I see anyone limp they get green.
Yellow/Orange = The intermediate colors between passive fish and reg/nit. If I see a fish who is doing anything thats not like your typical LP fish, than I will code him yellow. Regfish tend to get orange. Aggrodonks are also orange.
Red = Regs/nits. Red means avoid usually. I avoid nits because they are bad for profit for the most part, and regs for obvious reasons. If a reg is bad I usually bump him down to orange, like if he has some tendency I can exploit easily.
Purple = If the player doesn't fall into any of these specifically, like an LP fish who has auto-reload up to 40bb and tries creative bluffs. Mostly its the really spazzy guys that I code purple.

Re: Useful things for taking HEM notes
I use green for fish because HEM has an automatic setting that colors the VPIP green if its really high.
