Hand 1. SB limps you check behind.
Hand 2. SB raise you 3bet.

50% PFR
100% 3bet

Aha! Mind you, that's not to say PT3 is without bugs. Sometimes my HUD reports that a player has something impossible, eg 125% cbet% as a friend of mine joked, "surely 125% cbet% has to be exploitable?"

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

Finally reached the end of the thread... really great job with the implementation of the lessons. A+++

I'll probably be chiming in as well from here on out so I'll spill some beans about me:

Former limit hold em' player. I played mostly full ring until I got up to the 10/20 level and the only games going on were 6-max. After running like god for about 2 months at 10/20 6-handed, I had a bankroll of about $30,000. This was all about 5-6 years ago. (This was back in the time that 300 big bets was considered ok for limit) I ended up plateu'in at 30/60 on party poker and running break even for about 6 months. This killed me (I didn't even know about rakeback that long ago!). Drives me crazy thinking about how much I lost out on from rakeback, when I quit I had about 500,000 hands on poker tracker logged winning at about 1.1 bb/100. But about all of the last 1/3 of that was break-even at best and really tired me out of the game. The longer you are in it, the more obvious the variance comes into play, which can be daunting over time. (Especially in limit)

Anyways, I quit the game after those 6 months and started focusing on school. So fast forward four years or so and here I am. I've still played sporadically on and off as it's pretty tough to just completely quit when you had grind on the mind 24/7 like I did. I've played MTT's, SNG's, and all types of cash games, mostly at smaller limits. Pretty much all of which I've been successful at. I've never been able to get back into the grind of things as it's just not as important to me as it used to be. I've probably deposited $1-300 five or six times just to cash it out when it got to $1,000 or so for whatever reason. That being said, I've always used pretty strict bankroll limits. When I deposited $100 I would play 5 NL when I deposited $200 I'd play 10 NL, etc. It was never about building a roll, just about have some fun while killing time.

That being said, I really appreciate what the game has evolved into. The amazing clarity in which Verneer has shared these core game mechanics will really help everyone that reads/implements the lessons and will honestly give a great basis to start a very strong game. Start with this framework, and build up from it.

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

I have played mostly fr in the past which makes me a nit at 6 max. I have 2 questions. Can you win at 6 max with a vpip below 20 and if I am winning at fr why should I move to 6 max if most of the better players like 6 max?

I've wondered this as well. But, if all the better players like 6max, shouldn't that leave more bad players at FR?

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

haha doesnt work that way. The better players like 6-max because the fish like 6max better then FR, and you get a fish to yourself more at 6-max.

FR is good b/c theres less variance and the descisions are easier.

You can certainly win with a VPIP below 20, especially at the micros. Why would you want to focus on a certain VPIP though? I played something like 22/18 recently and most of it came from late position stealing.

Cause some of the bigger fish like SH play and you have fewer regs to compete with to get your share of the fish's expected loses. If you like FR, stay with FR though!

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

General Update: Stopping the Grind

Staring at 5NL, I've played 113K+ hands in 2010. Currently, my bankroll sits at $2,774.09 and I'm going to stop grinding FTP for a few reasons.

1. Going from $100 --> $2,500+ accomplishes the goal of building a bankroll at the micros. $2,774 is over 55 BI's for 50NL and means you are overrolled for that limit. The next step is 100NL which is def SSNL which is beyond the intent of this thread. Thus, I feel that I completed the goal of moving through uNL once I crossed the $2,500 mark. This wasn't my original goal, but I think it works.

2. It's starting to become more and more difficult to balance all that I do. My position with CardRunners takes a lot of time. Writing strategy articles for this thread takes a lot of time (try writing one ... it's harder than it seems ) I want to continue playing poker, but want to mostly focus on stakes higher than 50NL and I want it to be separate from this challenge. Thus, actually building the bankroll at uNL is time intensive and something which I have to prioritize lower.

3. To expand on what I wrote in part 2, I want to really focus on organizing and outlining a path which I believe will win you money at 50NL and below. I've tried to do this in this thread, but didn't have a lot of direct uNL experience when I first started and thus did everything informally. I've learned a LOT over the last few months and want to organize those thoughts in a more connected format. Thus, a lot of my energy will go into making this product (not sure what it will be yet).

You guys have been an incredibly motivating and positive force for me. I will continue to release content in this thread, although right now I'm planning to reflect some on my uNL experience, organize my thoughts on the matter, and come up with a direction on where to go from here.

Cliff Notes: I am not done with this thread, I'm not done with playing at uNL, but I'm mostly done with trying to grind out a bankroll at these stakes.

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

Verneer,

Congrats on getting there. This thread, and the time you have put into it has been really appreciated by me.

I have read all the posts, but I don't think I have really taken in more than 10% so far, so I'm going to start back at the index on p1.

I deposited $150 on FTP some weeks ago. Was -4BI in short order, so stopped to regroup & examine my game. Started playing a bit better, and was soon +4BI over where I started. Of course I thought that this was because I was getting good, but I now think the reality was that I was on a heater. Soon ran into another downswing and lost 7BI again.

So I began reading this thread, and taking other advice, and it has been definitely worthwhile for me. My number of hands is too small to say for sure, but I definitely feel I am playing much better (most of the time...), but I have a lot of leaks to address & stuff to learn. Nonetheless your advice has helped my BR on FTP get back to more than I started with (yay !).

I would pay money for your thoughts when you decide how you'll publish.

Re: Moving Up Through uNL in 2010

Well as someone who is trying to do similar and also someone very selfish Im disappointed to see you stop. I totally understand though and its still great that you did what you have. I know a lot of people really appreciate the time and effort you put into doing it and I hope that one day some of us can repay it. Perhaps by getting you a shave... Im kidding I hate shaving if I didnt have to see people Id look like tom hanks in castaway.

Hopefully this thread will live on as its got some great information in here, I'll certainly keep track of it regardless. Does this also mean that your proposed feeback on unl videos is no longer needed?

So thanks again. Vnh.
