This. Reg just means they play a lot. It doesn't mean they're good (though a reg is of course going to be better on average). Their other stats are a lot more useful in terms of playing appropriately against them.
For unknown players, check to see if they're multitabling (likely reg), if they're short stacked (likely rec), if they open limp (likely rec), and if their bet/raise sizes are silly (likely rec).
