I feel like I played this badly. I think what I should have done is deciding OTT if I commit to my hand or let it go. In this case I feel like folding turn would have been the right play. Villain had AF 1.

3bet pre and this hand is so much easier to play.

His sizing pre was a bit on the bigger side and he is raising rather tight so I decided not to go for 3bet. Was that thinking correct or is 3betting still the better option?

I 3B too. I expect his iso-range to be wider than his 3B range.
It's questionable to call and lay 2:1/3:1 odds for the limpers to continue.
AQs will have good equity against the hands he'll call 3B with and easy to release if he shoves. Re-iso to ~ 18 or so.

Definitely not played badly, I'd only argue for a river call, fairly safe run out, not behind much, flush missed, can vbet worse.
Fine with a preflop call to play vs a choice of fish, 3bet is also fine since initial raiser is also fishy.
