Bombing turn like that gets called by everything better and folds out everything worse. He is drawing to 2 outs with JJ and 4 outs with AK, so that bet size for "protection" is completely unnecessary.

You're right. To make matters worse, since I just picked up the diamond draw, he is drawing to 1.5 outs with any unimproved pocket pair and 2.25 outs with AK.
