Giving back. Very basic theory on NLHE (kind of pooh-bah)

Alrite, wrote this ages ago. Its all very basic but I think it could come in useful for someone. I've taken a lot out of 2p2 so maybe time to give something back.

Article in HTML

If this proves popular I wrote some stuff a while back on

* 3betting and playing against 3betting
* Double barreling
* Check raising continuation bets (both for value and as bluffs)

so I might put those up for you guys.

Enjoy

Really good basic info...if I was teaching a beginning friend, I'd use that as a template. (and wouldn't have minded something that simple and organized when i started)

Would be interested in seeing the others too.

Very nice article.I am getting ready to move up to nl25. Do you still advise to play 16/14/4 at the nl25 level and why do you think this is optimal?

It is a bit tighter than I played at nl10 (20/14/2 11PTBB). I have been thinking about what adjustments to my game should be at this level and a little tighter was something I was considering. Is this the stats you ran at micro stakes(nl??). and waht win rate did this produce for you?

Any advice as what I need to do at nl25 to be successful?

Please feel free to write more articles And thanks for your time.

Screw the basics, me wants to read about that.

Nice post btw! I'm actually surprised you advise being so loose UTG and UTG+1, I think I'll give it a try for a session or two, to see how that goes

Hey. Thanks for the positive feedback. I started playing $25NL from summer 06 til about jan of 07. I played 16/14 all the way until this summer on 400NL. I was able to win at 10BB/100 over 50,000 hand samples on 25NL/50NL and 8BB/100 on 100NL over 70,000 hands and something like 4.5BB/100 on 400NL over 100K+ hands.

By playing so tight I was able to play real real solid and build my fundamentals and recently I've opened up my game a lot to exploit regs / increase my winrate and because of such a solid basis it's made playing 23/20 very profitable for me. Its def what I recommend.

I will try to dig up the other article and improve them a bit then because I did write them a few months ago. Will try to post them in the new year.

Once again, thanks for the positive feedback all.

Currently on MSNL I am playing sort of 20% UTG and from what I've observed / talked about with lots of really great players this is what a lot of players play from EP. The fact that you are going to be the first one opening the pot and a lot of people behind you will fold a better hand is a big advantage. Also the concept or isolating bad players in the blinds means by playing a slightly wider range UTG you get to play more pots against those guys in position which is always awesome.

I don't recommends playing 20% EP on uNL though because your prob not going to get as many HU pots IP but playing a little looser like I outlined is def advantageous imo.

Actually the advice here is not loose at all, you'll see MSNL'ers advocate an UTG range including stuff like A2s+, 54s+, 64s+ and perhaps funky stuff like J8s+

With UTG+1 sometimes widening to include 54o+ etc ...

I feel like A2s+ from UTG+1 is a little loose? Id raise like A8s+ but Im not sure maybe I should raise wider. I raise lots of sc's UTG fwiw.

There is no difference between A8s and A2 (well not much), the point is that mostly your cards don't matter ... and once in a while you will hit a SSx flop, where you have a FD and GS (GS=the ace) and thus close to 50% equity and perhaps get a chance to 3bet-fold some marginal hand or get a lesser FD to go bananas on you drawing pretty slim.

But mostly cards don't matter.

Good writing. Your examples show very clearly what one should look for while playing and making decisions wether to fold, call or raise preflop.

I don't know if TJs and QJs are clear raising hands in EP uNL, because of RIO, but that's about it.

I would love to see your other articles.

Me too. This article made me realize that I've tightened up too much in EP and am probably passing on +EV hands because I'm afraid of playing OOP. I'd love to see the others.

Also, if you could spare us an hour of your time I'd love to see a video of you playing 50NL.

Thanks!
