Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

Just spoke with a friend who's back home on his two weeks off. He told me he makes around 4k a month post tax. I stepped back and realized everyone's inflating their income when I talk to them or he's just not paid well.

That pay is kinda disgusting for the conditions they endure.

lolwut?

I just went to a wedding of a Deloitte friend. The bride and half the wedding party were accountants there, and they were decidedly non-Asian, but they were extremely hot.

And another friend just left accounting at PwC, and I went out with him and his work friends a bunch, and there was only one Asian dude out of the whole group.

These friends are NY and Philly based fwiw. If you do your accounting in Hong Kong, maybe it's different.

And only working 2 weeks per month (though the hours are equivalent to 4 weeks basically)

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

My engineering internship paid $30+ an hour plus $ for relocation. I got to work in an office and gain valuable experience that was related to my career. I know that accounting internships also pay well so I see no reason for someone in the OP position to take this type of job.

AFAIK, he doesn't have time to get an internship as he's graduating early and has been taking an ass load of credits.

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

If I could get an internship at say McGladrey or Eide Bailley would it be worth delaying graduation? I imagine this would be a strong, "yes".

I know a girl who just got hired on at McGladrey and she has told me if I do well she'd try to get me on as an intern like she did. I imagine this would make it easier than trying to get in cold.

The more I type and think about it perhaps it would be best as if I do the financial markets program at my school I'd have another year of a light schedule. With this semester to make up it'd feel more worthwhile to be at school with a full schedule instead of 12 credits or so each semester if I had my accounting degree done before hand.

------------

In regards to the 60k, what I meant to exemplify was that many people will drop lines like, "shiittt yeah man I make like 80k out there". I'd like to start seeing some pay stubs.

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

It depends when you're going to graduate? Are you graduating May 2013 or do you have to take summer classes?

The time to do an internship was this summer or do one next summer and graduate December 2013.

Also, you should really talk to your career services AND the professors you trust.

I believe there is a misunderstanding of my academic pace.

This summer would of been impossible. I just finished Intermediate II two weeks ago and I can't imagine anyone would of
hired me as an intern with just two basic accounting classes. If I had not taken these four summer classes I would of done them this coming fall/spring.

I'm not considered a senior yet I'm just getting a head start on my junior year classes so that I can blow through my junior/senior years in one year if I decide to.

I just want to make sure it's understood that I didn't put on turbo boosters and blow through all my internship opportunities. In reality this coming spring is considered the internship semester by my school if I slowed down.

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

So, I guess I don't understand what your plan is.

Yes, you could get an internship with just Intermediate I. Spring/fall internships are far and few between. Summer is peak internship time. You really need to decide what your plan is because recruiting for internships AND full time offers for 2013 starts very soon (early fall semester). You also need to keep in mind the 150 hrs requirement for the CPA. How many hours will you have?

Sorry if I'm being aggro with you, but like I said, you absolutely have to figure this out NOW

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

Maybe accounting is different but they hire interns during the school year all the time for engineering. Make a list of accounting firms, financial companies and other interesting looking employees, go to their websites and start applying. Don't be afraid to apply for out of state positions.

I personally got my internship by applying for an out of state position at a fortune 500 tech company listed on my school website. They email me back to interview for a position 15 miles away. Top companies start looking now for summer 2013 employees/interns.

Have you ever worked a "real" job. My guess is no.

Re: Would you leave school for 60-75k a year?

honestly, it really depends. under normal circumstances, i'd say no, don't drop out.

if you really don't like school, have no idea what you want to do, or for some reason feel really passionate about grinding your ass off in a oil field because you want to learn about that industry, then maybe it is the right decision. if debt is a real issue for you and you'd like to graduate debt free then maybe that's another reason to do it.

I faced a similar situation in college and decided to stick through with college. It just depends for each person so while I recommend getting people's advice on a message board, ultimately you have to make your own decision. If you aren't at least 95% sure you are making the right decision by dropping out, then I'd stay in school.
