I agree. The problem is one of us in particular refuses to take off work and drive 4 hours back to school for court. All 9 of us are scattered around the east coast and it would be tough to get everyone there. Also, the lawyer the 9 of us were supposed to have hasn't responded to my email or voice message, so we may need to look elsewhere. I think finding a lawyer to pay on contingency would be optimal. I wonder if all 9 of us definitely would have to go to court?

I doubt that all 9 of you would need to travel. If you need something like depositions, that can be done from anywhere.

The law kids can probably be more specific as I have limited experience with this stuff.

Just don't pay your last months rent (or however much the security deposit is), that way he won't have any money to steal from you. He will not have the time or enenergy to pursue legal rememdies against you. Downside is he will never be a reference.

Problem is I pre-dated the final bunch of checks and gave it to him a while ago. He still hasn't cashed the last month's though, wonder if I can issue a stop-payment without knowing the check #

No because I'm an idiot and didn't record it. This one lawyer that was recommended to us is impossible to reach so I'm STILL looking for someone. Very frustrating

I said this already, but landlord tenant statues almost ALWAYS have attorney fee provisions, and attorneys practicing in the area will almost ALWAYS work on contingency/offset. No excuse not to be talking to attorneys.
