Henry,

I think most people are unable to get through college without taking any notes, and this is likely mostly determined by predisposition, so that approach is not realistic.

With regard to transition from class to social, there are a lot of options. Leave in locker, leave in car, lug it with you (which would look normal at a campus pub), not plan to go straight from school to social on heavy load days, etc.

Calm down. We are talking in terms of style, not practicality. This isnt the SL Practicality thread. If you think the pro's outweigh the cons, fair enough. But if you dont NEED the extra room/ease of a backpack, get a messenger bag.

ASCII? Have you ever heard of the Microsoft Office software called OneNote?

It sucks, if you have to walk around a ton, but that's a logistic disaster on the school's part.

We also got lockers, where you can put your stuff, so you can deposit it during the week and take them home as you need it.

Also, do you use books in class? In LOL_Europe we usually read in the book at home to prepare or use it as secondary literature, but in class we always got slides and/or lecture notes written by the prof.

fishmeout,

Getting any textbook into electronic format if you don't mind destroying the book takes less than 15 minutes.

---------

If you are carrying all this **** around how do you transition from class to social? Do you take everything home or carry it around all day? If you bring it to the campus pub how do you ensure it doesn't get stolen?
what do you do with library books? i also believe that most people prefer physical text versions for various reasons, but that could be false.

after class i walk/bike/ride bus back to my house, nap/do hw/troll 2p2/used to play poker online and then later go out for dinner and partying. rarely did i go to the pub immediately after class, except when there was a soccer match on that i would watch with friends over a few pints but would bring my backpack and have no problems as the pub i went to was full of students doing the same thing. i was usually "on campus" (i say that in quotations because, for the most part, everyone lived within walking or cycling distance to the quads) for class 4-5 hours each day depending on my schedule, and would go back later if i needed to study for exams or papers.

Also, in terms of style, I think a messenger bag is inferior to good backpack. So it loses in both respects imo.

That was what I was thinking. I have had OneNote since my M200 tablet 8 years ago and it allows for any kind of notes.

I do prefer physical books at home but I'd sacrifice that for not having to carry them around.

I assume you mean making trips to the library for research since I can't see any reason to being library books to class. For library trips for when I needed to retrieve material for research i would just carry them. Most of my research involved material that couldn't be checked out so I would photocopy a lot but carrying 6-8 books with no bag for a short distance isn't hard. It can also be an ice-breaker if someone sees you with them.

Going to the library was a special trip and rarely more than once ever ten days or so while going to the pub was a daily thing. We had 3 on campus bars so anytime there was a gap we'd go to get a drink which often resulted in never going to the next class. No lockers and while I was lucky because I had grad student parking so had a spot right in the middle of campus for most people going to the undergrad lots was a bit of a walk. Being light and not having anything that you would care if you lost was important. It is hard to flirt if you have to keep looking back to your table to make sure no one is making off with your ****. Odds of getting though a year without loss of something is very low.

That is the difference. We'd go home to go out for the night but even during the day we'd spend a lot of time at the pubs in the afternoons. With some smaller classes and cool profs we'd occasional move the class to the pub. At least a quarter my corporate law classes were held at a campus pub.

What's a courier bag?

I don't like this bag nearly as much as the first one.

Same as a messenger bag
08-22-2011 , 08:29 PM
That first bag that V posted is a messenger bag.

The 2nd bag is only for drumsticks and mallets and **** for actual performances. It's just a gig bag.
08-22-2011 , 08:33 PM
I was thinking more

08-22-2011 , 08:38 PM
Yeah that bag is mint.
08-22-2011 , 08:49 PM
I feel like if I had that bag, I'd be lazy and not fasten the straps, thus making it look meh

I do agree that it's very professional. I just don't dress professionally on a daily basis so it would look goofy on me.
08-22-2011 , 08:59 PM
that bag is sick but too much $ for me.
08-23-2011 , 06:32 AM
sorry but 99% of grad students/college students can't afford an hermes bag or hermes anything for that matter. messenger bags look good but aren't as practical as backpacks and that's simply a trade off most students can't make

if you're out of school and you only have to carry a notebook and two pens, the messenger bag will do
08-23-2011 , 07:04 AM
You are right on the Hermes which is why I previously suggest Jack Spade for a student's budget.

100% wrong on the need to carry stuff around. I may not be a student now but I was a student for ten years and I never needed to carry that much stuff. There is no way to look good encumbered and it isn't necessary. I'd love to see a list of the stuff people think they need to carry around for a day.
08-23-2011 , 09:11 AM
Yeah you guys are doing it wrong if you lug all your books to class etc.Who takes textbooks to class? WTf? If they say something you dont understand during the lecture, make a note of it, dont start browsing through your textbook mid lecture.

Do they not have powerpoint presentations etc in America? In 5 years at uni I think I had 3 lecturers who refused to use modern technology, so obviously had to take pretty intensive notes there. For the rest, most lecture summaries were put up on the internet, or dealt with a specific case or textbook subject.
08-23-2011 , 09:11 AM
Students need scripts and pads - how did you study without carrying them around?
08-23-2011 , 10:08 AM
That looks an awful lot like a purse.

Bringing textbooks to class is almost never necessary. I just kept my laptop, one spiral notebook that I mostly drew pictures in, and loose papers that were handed back to me in a plain black backpack and continued with this strategy each semester. Every teacher I had put powerpoint slides online.
08-23-2011 , 02:26 PM
What I carry around is usually just my laptop + charger, and most days I don't need much else.

However, for some science classes you have to bring your lab manual and book to practicals. Even if it's just the manual you can get away with bringing, manuals usually have dimensions that are the size or bigger than a page, and are over an inch thick.
08-23-2011 , 02:26 PM
i feel like its obv that people aren't accounting for different majors. i'm a poli sci major and like henry, the most i've ever needed to carry was a laptop or 1 notebook or something. i'd expect differently from an applied math or org chem major or something. although i will say that unless you have a block of 4 classes that day or w/e, a solid majority of students imo would be fine w messenger bags.
08-23-2011 , 02:55 PM
Ya, the only reason I ever take a textbook to class pretty much is if I have a big break in the middle of the day and need to get some **** done. Taking the book to >90% of classes is pretty damn lol

also, just heard of this site:

really great sorting options.. gonna spend hours here.
