I've been happy with Levi's 511 which are slim fit, they have a nice taper at the leg. They made a 513 which is slim straight but the bottom is still too loose IMO

Yeah, I wear 511's now. Granted they're a great value/fit, but some of the stitching is coming undone after a few months. Looking to get a bit higher quality.

Bonobos is having a pretty big sale. Much more selection than usual.

https://bonobos.com/shop/sale
04-27-2016 , 05:53 PM
That sale has been going on for a while. Wont be much great stuff left for most people i imagine.

Their 25% off sale selection is meh too(seperate sale with certain colors and styles of a lot of things for 25 off, the colors are always the bad ones)

Iirc they had a pretty decent memorial dale sale last year. One of their, the more you spend the more you get off sales.

Any of you guys know about cashmere? Looking for a decent pullover for a trip to Europe and it seems like you need to spend at least $200 (and about as much as I want to spend) for a good quality one. Any suggestions?

What do you all think about this jacket? I guess it's reversible.
Ted Baker London $225.00

Yeah $200 is the absolute minimum and $300-400 is more likely. Why cashmere? I like cashmere but tbh if you are not super focussed on it the difference is not noticable.
05-01-2016 , 12:56 PM
I don't have anything cashmere - and I think it would be light and not bulky for packing purposes. Also thinking about just a cashmere scarf.

Also, any reason to think cashmere prices would be much different in Holland, Prague, or Berlin compared to US?
05-01-2016 , 02:13 PM
It depends on the thickness of the cashmere if it's lighter and thicker or not. I wouldn't go by that.

And I assume prices will be cheaper in the US due to sales tax.

The US is easiest the cheapest when it comes to clothing, and Holland isn't a country, we're called The Netherlands.

For a thrilling four-minute information smack in the face you can watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eE_IUPInEuc with details about the difference.

Enjoy the trip, but all clothing you should really buy before you leave, Prague might be a bit cheaper but wouldn't count on it.

My Heineken bottle says "brewed in Holland", so it must exist!

Anybody have a rec for a good pair of black slip-ons that are dressy enough for a suit but can also work with dark jeans for a more casual look? Is there a pair of AEs that are perfect for this?
05-01-2016 , 06:06 PM
Rmb,

I like it (the plain side at least). I've been meaning to get a simple Harrington jacket for like three years now.

Brad,

Dead god no if the below is what you're describing (sounds like it). If you need to really dress up a suit (lawyer, black tie wedding) get a proper black cap toe dress shoe like the AE Park Avenue. Otherwise, if you want a versatile shoe that can work for suits and nice jeans, try a brown AE wingtip or something like that.

Alright wondering if anyone could help me out. I'm fairly clueless when it comes to fashion. I have to dress professionally for work and I want to look good. Meaning, dress pants and a dress shirt...no tie or jacket or anything. Where do I shop and what do I buy? Also I'm on a teacher's salary so it can't break the bank. My current modus operandi has just been going to a store like JCP or Macey's and finding whatever I think looks good on the clearance rack. I tend to wear dark pants and plain darkish colored shirts. I have a pretty dark complexion (Mediterranean features) and am 5"11, average build if it matters. Thanks.

Start slow, start reading some fashion blogs or subreddits, try r/malefashionadvice or r/frugalmalefashion, dappered.com etc.

I'm a quality over quantity guy, but I understand that's tough when you start out. But yeah just as an example I think having 2 SuitSupply suits in navy and grey is way better than 5-6 clearance rack Macy's suits. Or 2 brooks brothers/ledbury shirts in light blue and white >>> 6-7 Macy's shirts. So just keep that in mind when you're buying stuff.

Cheap stuff is usually gonna look cheap but if it fits properly you'll still look better than all the other schlubs doing what you're currently doing which is probably most teachers are. For cheap basics, Uniqlo and J Crew Factory aren't terrible. J Crew, Banana Republic, Bonobos run good sales on their sale/clearance stuff that are much better than the usual 20-30% off but you need to keep an eye out. Frugalmalefashion is good for that.

It's a process, you'll need to do your own research and craft your own style from that. Don't just buy clothes b/c they're cheap or on clearance. When you're starting out get something versatile (i.e. a white or light blue dress shirt, goes with basically everything), that fits right and you know what outfits it can go with. Stick with neutral/basic colors and basic patterns in the beginning.

A good idea might be go to one of the stores listed above and try on some basic outfits that you think you'd typically wear to wear to work, take some pictures and post for feedback. Also maybe post something you currently wear.

The theory behind that is that most Americans think Holland is part of Germany and they like to drink German beer, so we sell our beer as German beer.

One big sellout for profits, Heineken is brewed in Holland though (they're two provinces in The Netherlands which contain our most important cities, Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague.)

@ The shoes posted above here, those are really fugly.

Fish,

+1 to everything mullen said. You could go to J Crew and buy three pairs of their slim slacks--charcoal, grey and navy--wear nothing but those three to work and probably never have anyone notice (guys are lucky in that department). Start with the very basics and expand from there. As mullen alluded to, if you're currently buying Macy's and JCP stuff your biggest problem is probably fit. J Crew slim fit medium dress shirts might work and then be on the lookout for sales when you find a brand and size that fits well.

While most people on styleforum spend more on clothes than you'll be wanting to, it's a great source for inspiration. I'm guessing the "Classic Menswear, Casual Style" thread over there would be perfect for you (their definition of casual is slacks and a dress shirt).

I'm seeing a lot of like-new condition Brooks Brothers dress shirts/suits popping up at consignment shops around me on the cheap, so if you're not adverse to pre-owned, you can try those places as well.

Interesting and weird - I never thought of Holland as part of Germany. I know about the Deutsche and Dutch confusion, but I'm pretty sure most USAers are going to think windmills and wooden shoes when they think Holland.

I ordered through Charles Tyrwhitt when I was first creating my professional wardrobe. They often have sales for around $35 per shirt, and the quality is very high for the price. I'm not sure if they'll have your size, but there's a bunch of shirts in the clearance section right now from $20-30.
The Slim fits are actually slim, which is somewhat rare, and I get compliments all the time. Huge selection of patterns and material. And you can even pick the cuffs, collar, etc.

http://www.ctshirts.com/

For pants, I would spend a little more and start out with Bonobos or some equivalent. I went cheap to start (~$40 a pair) from a store like J. Crew and have been kicking myself every since. Tough to pull the trigger now on Bonobos, since I'd essentially be getting the same colors.

I love ct shirts and they have really good fit guides for their three fits. I have like 15 dress shirts from them.
