This is just a ridiculous statement. Who are you trying to impress? 90% of the time the clothes worn by college students are worn while going to class/going out/hanging out with friends. In situations where it matters how people perceive you (interviews, receptions, networking opportunities, etc.) then obviously you want to dress nicely. But day in day out you are a just college student, so while you personally may like to dress more nicely than most, its dumb to say that everyone should behave that same way.
As for the backpack...if you like ones similar to northface check out ogio politan
I bought it a year and a half ago and its still in great condition, nicer than north face imo and cheaper. Holds my 17" laptop with ease in addition to a few textbooks and notebooks.
