Do you wanna stand out as the dude in a tux or the dude in flip flops on a random party?
Obv you're taking it to the extreme with that example. I said "slightly." For instance: you are taking a girl out and aren't sure between something like a shortsleeve button/polo with jeans, or a long sleeve button up with a pair of nice pants.

The place you're going to plays a pretty big roll but generally, the answer is whatever you feel comfortable in.
Most people underdress so odds are you are actually dressed appropriately and everyone else is wrong.
This.
The fear of being overdressed is usually by people who dont really know how to dress.
Most of the stuff that makes you overdressed is usually not in their wardrobe anyways.
So with the new semester coming up I'm in the market for a new backpack/messenger bag and also a new pair of shoes to wear with jeans on a daily basis.
My first question is what's better backpack or the messenger bag? Is a messenger bag too feminine? I really only carry around an iPad and a notebook at the most so smaller the better.
Next, what are your opinions on puma suede shoes? Any other shoe suggestings?
Even in undergrad. Nothing > Messenger Bag >>>>>>>>> Backpack. A backpack is more acceptable in undergrad but acceptable isn't what you should be going for.
Nothing wrong at all with a backpack. Just have one that looks professional. We are talking about numerous people who dress in sweats to class. You are insecure if you can't wear a backpack to class.
Obv overdressing is better. And you can say "oh you mad cause I'm stylin' on you?" Can't do that underdressing. Plus you'll get compliments and exude confidence.

People against backpacks don't travel or carry much. I have a Topo Designs daypack and after removing the branding and lash tabs it looks really good, is very well made, and has plenty of storage for books + laptop/iPad.
Topo Designs, GoRuck, North Face purple label, etc. make backpacks which would be acceptable in any environment.
