Do you want to look good or look "trendy"? Ed Hardy and Affliction. Buy some True Religion jeans (or any denim with skulls and crosses!) and square toed Cole Haan loafers to complete the trendy look. Get some sunglasses which have the logo of a known fashion designer on the side, preferably a European inspired frame. Ask for a large bag from said designed sunglass retailer and put all your new trendy clothes in the bag so while you're walking out of the mall onlookers will know that you're staying up on the latest trends and will spend the coin necessary to do so.

Everyone gives off a unique scent. I think fragrances like Polo Blue, D&G Light Blue, etc. tend to fit most guys, or at least most guys don't smell awful while wearing them (though they are tired/boring scents iyam)

IMO the best way to shop for cologne is research sites like BaseNotes, StyleForum, etc. for ideas, then buy small decants from a site like ThePerfumedCourt. The decants are only like $5/each and applied correctly the decants will last a few days each. From there you should buy a fragrance based on how it smells to you while considering the opinions of others. You don't need to get carried away with smelling how you look/dress but if you're some burly dude you probably don't want to smell like Issey Miyake or some other scent that could be considered gender neutral, so think about that when making a purchase.
