I sat Forte tonight. Didn't have Amendola starting, but doesn't matter anyway. I'm up by a ton of points.

This is where you are wrong. Who says I can't put my team second to money? Or what if I am a casual fan and would like to see my team win, but I don't really care? You are making a ridiculous assertion that everyone should root for their football team as hard as you do.

tl;dr
11-12-2012 , 12:04 PM
Nah I mean I kind of get it. For me, since I don't rely on income from sports betting or bet anything even remotely significant (similar to LKJ's lunch example), the bet will never > my emotional attachment (if any) to the teams.

If I were some professional handicapper tho, I 100% agree with him in that you should be as robotic and unemotional as possible. I know some handicappers won't bet on teams that they have an emotional investment in, but I kinda disagree with that. I feel like I should/would be MORE +EV with teams that I'm attached to b/c I'll have a more consistent working knowledge of the team.
11-12-2012 , 12:13 PM
Yeah, I mean they at least shouldn't shy away from it at first. Now if my results showed that my EV was worse in games with that team, then yeah different story. It's difficult/impossible to gauge just how well you're being objective about your own team.

Like in my Pigskin Pick 'Em league on ESPN against my friends, I'm doing worse on Seahawk games than the Seahawks are doing themselves (I'm 4-6 in picking their games). As it turns out, I'd be better in the standings if I just went full homer and picked my team to win every week. In general I'm still picking the league well and I'm in second place in a group of 10. LOL sample size, but it tells me that I'm not being truly dispassionate with my picks. This went on last year as well.

im in a sizeable confidence pool at work and before the season had told myself i would put 1 point on carolina to win each game.

quit doing that after week 2 and have put a ton on them to lose since then.
11-12-2012 , 12:24 PM
Like yesterday against the Jets was the only time that I felt totally confident about a Seahawks result and it bore out exactly like I thought it would (I said 31-10, it was 28-7, finally I was on point). Everything else has been all over the board.
11-12-2012 , 01:41 PM
ive picked the seahawks at home and against them on the road. works well
11-12-2012 , 01:42 PM
I'm all over the place. Picked them to lose the road game they won obviously.
11-12-2012 , 01:55 PM
well that was just silly
11-15-2012 , 10:46 AM
lkj: if i said i was indifferent to a loss since it would help draft position and thus rooting for doug martin this weekend, how many demerits on my nfl fan license would that get me?
11-15-2012 , 10:53 AM
I always fundamentally disagree with rooting against your team before they're completely out of it, especially given the uncertain nature of the draft.

Double that sentiment for when you're playing a division rival.
11-15-2012 , 10:54 AM
i cant actively root against them, its more like when something bad happens i just think "oh well" instead of being upset like i would in a playoff race
11-15-2012 , 11:02 AM
Yeah I understand that feeling perfectly well as a Seahawks fan.

In the meantime I'll be rooting for the Panthers for knocking down Tampa in the wildcard race.
11-17-2012 , 06:45 PM
I was just interviewed at a bar about beer and football. Guy asked who I'm rooting for if my fantasy qb is driving against my favorite team in a close game.

I also provided breaking market research that if a beer is on special I'm more likely to buy it

Did I just read that Barkley got injured right at the end of UCLA-USC? Notre Dame's run of luck this year is insane.

Anyway whatever, rooting for K State and Oregon to win out. Then it won't matter and ND will functionally have a one-loss season for bowl placement purposes no matter what happens in their game next week.

He should have taken the money

Nice jinx
11-18-2012 , 09:14 AM
Now simply rooting for someone is a jinx?
11-18-2012 , 09:39 AM
In my world, the question is more like... what ISNT a jinx?
11-18-2012 , 10:05 AM
It bothers me that I'll go to my grave never knowing how much you actually believe in jinxes.
11-18-2012 , 10:07 AM
A co-worker once told me that his wife was a Raiders fan, but that she didn't watch their games because she felt that it was bad luck for them when she watched them. So she would watch all other games and then just hope that the score came out well for the Raiders. She also would stop her husband from watching Raider games because that was bad luck too, even though he was a Packers fan.
11-18-2012 , 10:25 AM
ok IRL i actually only believe jinxes exist in regards to teams i support so i guess.... root ND to finish undefeated and for UF to not win out?

also your coworker needs to get divorced.
