Intermediate 2 is tough but if u got an A in 1, u should get atleast a b. study more. I got a b in intermediate 1 with a bad teacher and an A in 2 with a decent teacher. Idk intermediate is easy bc professors curve and a lot of people are stupid and don't do well at my school so curves we're always 10-20 pts and I got 70-90s on test pre-curve but studied a ton for tests. I would study atleast 6-8 hrs for a test by reading text and practice problems. It's really not hard if u put the time in

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

What are your career aspirations right now? If you are looking to pursue your CPA license, like I am doing currently, get the best you can do and move on. Advanced accounting I (and II if offered at your college) are more complex than Intermediate, but can be easier if you understand the material. I struggled with Intermediate I and II (Got a B in both), but did very well in Advanced I and II. A review course is a must if you are looking to get your CPA license. The course will teach you everything you need to know and you will remember material that you learned in your intermediate I and II courses.

Ultimately, I'd like to have intuitive knowledge of business and apply it in many aspects of my life (investing, advising, planning, etc.). I didn't choose accounting so much for finding a career in corporate America as I did it for my own personal benefit and gain.

I wouldnt worry about this class then. The usefulness of intermediate and advanced is only for CPA candidates. Since it seems like you arent one of them, I would suggest just get the best grade you can get and move on. Tax and law courses are going to be your most useful courses in an accounting program because they will help you throughout your life, whether it be filing a return or conducting any type of business.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

I was an accounting major but switched to statistics-- but in my experience(through Intermediate I), there were some things in accounting I found super easy, and some things I found very difficult. I talked to other people and everybody seemed to have a niche at other parts, etc. so maybe you will more quickly grasp upcoming material?

I'd say stick with it.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

The best business degree you can get is a math degree with a minor in economics. And it's not close. That being said Finance, accounting, and straight econ are probably in a 3 way tie for 2nd. Stick it out every degree has a horrible 'gut' course that makes people want to commit suicide.

Can it be said that accounting has better job security while finance has better opportunities in growth?

On average that's probably true. I've had a lot of friends whose parents settled into accounting jobs with a max salary of $75K. But I suppose they're fine just working 8-5 every day and doing the minimum. Now those who get their CPA and stick with public accounting are looking at a very bright future be it making partner in a big 4 or going into practice for yourself. And it might surprise you but CFO's in the private sector typically have a background in accounting and not finance. But if you're willing to put the hours in, accounting can have a great career path.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

I ended up getting a "B" in Intermediate Accounting II and an "A-" in Accounting Information Systems if anyone were curious.

Cborders:

Finance is viable just bust your ass and make sure you have an extremely strong GPA. I'd also do tons of outside reading on finance/investing/markets. Minoring in accounting wouldn't be a bad move. Finance related decisions are based heavily on financial reports and accountants are the ones who prepare those reports. I feel with both you'd have a strong feel for business.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

OP, stick it out. Unless you don't wanna be a CPA.
I had an awful time in my accounting classes last semester (financial and intermediate). Dropped 1, no clue what grade I got in the other. But I plan to continue b/c I had a good experience in my managerial class. IDK if it was due to more interesting subject, or better teacher.

I assume the only math you might need for CS would be Discrete. I assume other math, like stats based programming would be optional. CS might actually be a minor that could boost your job opportunities. I'd say go for CS or math. Econ would be easiest, but also the most useless IMO. But econ is pretty rewarding if you enjoy nitting things up. My degree is Econ btw.

This is total bull****.

Go to any school that has a good business school, and I guarantee that's far better than a math degree with a minor in econ. Especially since math and econ aren't nearly as valuable unless you go to grad school.

I did! I'm quite happy I did now. I was really upset at the time but things turned around and I see the light at the end of the tunnel. I just hope it isn't a train.

I take it you're working towards the BAcc?

Right now I don't know what I am working towards. In my state we need (or in 2013) 24 units of accounting courses + 24 units of business related courses + bachelors degree to sit for CPA exam. I think...

I already banged out the bachelors degree + business related courses. So I will take another semester at my CC and see how the accounting goes. I just finished my undergrad and am unemployed, with a little bit of poker money, so I have some time on my hands for this.

So I am no accounting expert. But I think if you do poor in classes that's fine if your long term goal is passing the CPA exam.
