Should I get out of accounting?

I'm currently taking Intermediate Accounting 2 this summer term. I have a "D" in it after the first exam of four. It's not so much my grade that's deterring me as perhaps the light is starting to shine on me. I have an "A" in all my accounting classes up to this point (Financial, Managerial, Intermediate 1) so I obviously tried up until this point but I'm hitting a wall.

I have a Chinese professor who I can't understand and I'd say that's probably in the top five things that has ever pissed me off in my life. Dad died when I was seven but this bitch bothers me more than that. I wanted to drop out of the class after the 3rd session but I told myself to stop being a pussy now I'm calling myself a dumbass for sticking it out and now cannot be reimbursed anything if I were to drop it. You go in for help and it's like she's disturbed that you're lost. "You no remember what rule is if A occurs after B but C is still a contingency based upon D". I want to drop trouser and piss on the floor Gary Busey style.

I see accounting as the top of the business pyramid. I guess I chose it because most of the business school majors are bull**** and I figured accountants can do what they do and then some. I liked accounting initially as I saw it as a way to self-sustain myself in the event I start a business. Everyone says once you get passed this ass banging of a course things are much more pleasant. I'm just not sure if I care much about what account gets credited, account for stock warrants, etc. Financial accounting is only one field of accounting so perhaps there much more to like out there.

Maybe I'm just burnt out from Fall-June school schedule. Anyone ever want to burn this ****ing book? Sorry for incoherent rambling, just very pissed.

Stick it out imo, youll be happy when you get to make 60k a year out of school.

Btw I had a dumb azn teacher for Business Stat which I got a D in, guy couldnt even write proper english on the tests, which were contingent on wording to get the right answer. infuriating.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

Drop the class unless you get a good grade on the next midterm. You will want to maintain a good GPA to get a Big 4 internship when you are a Junior. Don't change majors just because of one bad teacher or one hard class. Use http://blog.ratemyprofessors.com/ to avoid bad teachers.

Doesn't OP post one of these messages every semester to change schools or majors?

Intermediate 2 was pretty easy for me. I'm thinking if you are having this much trouble study harder or forget accounting. It isn't for everyone. The CPA exam awaits and that will be much much more grueling.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

You should stick it out. I have an accounting BS and Masters and I can tell you from experience that you will not get the wide-ranging skills you get in an accounting major from any other major in college (I know, I tried 3 others, haha).

The great thing about owning an accounting degree is the fact that you will always have job opportunities, accountants and auditors are always in demand and will never be completely replaced by computers. Beyond the job opportunities is the obvious financial benefit of being an accountant/auditor. I'm 4 years removed from college and making nearly six-figures. I'm not going to sit here and tell you that every person with an accounting degree is going to make $100k right out of school, but the opportunities are there.

You shouldn't drop a major because you have a ****ty grade in a class, either drop the class (not a bad option, I did it once myself) or just stick it out and take the grade. Either way I would advise against dropping one of the best majors you can possibly own out of school. Good luck!

Not an accounting major but have seen many ppl force themselves through that path because of the benefits post graduation.

decide if you want to do that. then decide if you like it

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

I actually found my intermediate accounting classes to be slightly more difficult than any of the CPA exams, FWIW.

OP, if you truly value the safety and security of the income that an accounting degree will get you - pull it together and knock out the next 3 tests ... But 99% of jobs that acct majors take (public accounting audit/tax, internal audit/financial reporting at fortune 1k, or misc accounting role in industry) are miserable. Corporate culture makes me want to vomit, very very few companies reward employees based on performance, politics/bullsht/kissing the butt of your anal type-A female powerhungry feminist senior/manager, and the fact that a diligent 16 year-old with half a brain could adequately perform the work you will be doing -- All reasons to dive into that start up idea imo. However, like I said, if you want steady income for a few years out of school while trying to start something on your own, get it together in this class.

What kind of business do you want to start btw?

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

OP,

I had a friend in college who can probably best be described as an average student. She struggled mightily in Intermediate Accounting despite putting a LOT of work in and had to retake it, but by all accounts has a relatively successful career now. Lots of my friends who did accounting tell me how Intermediate Accounting makes everyone feel like they are inadequate or will fail.

Also, I know BarretBoy IRL and he legit knows his stuff. You should take his advice to heart.

Thank you. One thing I never do is bull****. I know there are people on this forum who have way more life experience than me, have more success, and been down the roads I'm curious about. I'm generally inquisitive in nature hence I always seek to find out more from you guys.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

what school do you go to?

I switched from accounting to finance and could not have been happier that I made the change during my 3rd year, however it depends on the program (non-target, semi, or target)

do you hold any outside interest in investing, do the follow the markets? if you have decent accounting based analytical skills, you will be fine and probably even more happy in finance, but it probably to late to take a traditional path towards the investment banking / wall street side of finance.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

Don't change majors because you have a bad teacher

If you seriously don't enjoy they accounting then you probably should switch, but if you don't find it unbearable it will most likely give you the best avenue to the career of your choice in the future. When i was at your point i really had no idea what work in public accounting would be like, the best choice imo is to give yourself as many options as possible once you enter the working world and get better info on what specific careers are like, i think accounting does that.

FWIW, I majored in accounting and finance planning the entire way to jump from public accounting to a management role in the private sector. I haven't worked in public accounting long but i have really enjoyed it, i'm not in a hurry to leave it anytime soon now.

Re: Should I get out of accounting?

I go to the University of Minnesota - Duluth. I took a breather on Friday and spoke with a few professors who I respect. All could relate to the frustration they had in studying accounting but urged me to stick with the class and especially the major. I decided that I'll do my best and if my grade isn't at least a C+ I can retake the class in the fall and crush.

I buckled down this weekend and studied like my life depended on it. Things really began to click and I realized that with her as a teacher I'm just going to have to learn things my own way and that I can't rely on her to relay information effectively. My professor from Intermediate 1 was honestly the best instructor I've had in all my academic life. He taught it in a manner that was fluid, intuitive, and fun so perhaps my bar was set pretty high for this current professor.

I feel quite confident about my exam tomorrow and I see my grade climbing up to a "B" if I focus like no other.

Thank you to everyone who's been polite and helpful in this thread!
