I'm seconding what Wyman says. Getting a good financial internship goes a long long way towards full time employment if you discover that you really like it, and want to do that instead of grad school.

Plus, everyone I've talked to who has worked there has absolutely loved it. You can't say that about many job environments.

From what I've been reading on a grad school forum, the NSF GRFP award notifications are supposed to go out really soon! Apparently someone called on Thursday and got the response "within the next week". I don't know why I am so nervous/excited for this announcement. Probably because it is the last grad school-type announcement I am waiting on. I feel I have less than a 1 in 10 shot of getting an award on my first attempt, but anything is possible, hoping the people that reviewed my essays were feeling generous!

Furyshade, PM me. I can help you out some.

While this is not quite true in a vacuum, the last 3 months have been unbelievable. I'm running on the biggest life heater ever right now.

Safe to say the NSF is more $$$$ than UIUC funding (was like $30k by the time I finished grad school...balla)

I have a BA in French (with a Linguistics slant, I also speak a couple of other languages to varying standards) and an MA in Transnational Studies from one of the UK's leading research universities.

I'm looking into the possibility of doing a PhD in sociolinguistics or cultural studies somewhere in the US - the first department that's caught my eye is the Department of Media, Culture and Communication at NYU, but really I'd be open to anywhere and I'm only just starting to look into options.

Any advice for those in the humanities or those coming from abroad? What about funding? I'm guessing I'm gonna have to ship a few donkaments to pay for it...
Bump for potential help? Anyone?

Surely your professors will know the good places in the USA?

Just had phone interview with SIG, seemed to go well. I am pretty sure I nailed 3 of the questions, 1 of them i may have ****ed up half of it, going to check work. They said they will let me know within a week.

Well, yeah, they know stuff, but I figured someone here might have some relevant experience.

I guess not though, most people here seem to be in other fields. Never mind, ty anyway.

Got my NSF review sheets today. While I didn't get the award I'm not that bummed it was more for signaling value anyhow. However, one of the reviewers mentioned me having a D in a class which I received a B in. Do you think this is most likely him/her misreading or should I check the paper transcripts my school has been sending out?
04-07-2011 , 10:46 PM
What harm/effort expended is it going to take to check the paper transcripts? And you're never going to know if the reviewer just misread, so you already know the answer.

I probs will. Also got my first funded offer (PhD) today. Huge cartoonish sigh of relief...
