Masters of Accountancy

I have a client who's son is considering going for this degree, and I was curious if anyone had any experience with it.
Currently he is doing odd jobs for his father, but has been unsuccessful in finding a job with his general business degree.
The program he is considering is San Diego State if that matters.
He enjoyed his accounting classes during his undergraduate course work and is looking for an advanced degree that will be attractive to a number of suitors.
TIA

Re: Masters of Accountancy

I'm currently finishing up my Masters of Accountancy. Will be graduating in December. I'd be happy to answer any questions you have.

Thank you for your willingness.
Was your undergraduate work in Accounting?
What made you decide to get a Master's?
What are your job prospects/do you have an offer on the table?
Is your program well regarded?
Thanks again.

Re: Masters of Accountancy

I'll give my input as I am beginning a MACC in a week.

My undergrad degree was Finance, didn't know which field I wanted to choose so I decided on the CPA route. I decided against an MBA for now because I do not have the work experience, it takes longer, costs more, and I could still end up in the same position that I am in now. The MACC only takes 1 year, costs less, and prepares you for a specific field (public accounting). They are mostly designed to teach towards the CPA exam and give the extra credit hours to reach 150.

My program is ranked in the 20-25 range. Rankings are not a huge deal with MACC's but the top programs are heavily recruited by the Big 4, which is the goal of most accounting students. Job prospects should be good (decent shot at Big 4, if not then a mid-sized firm or just about any other entry level business job) outside of high finance positions which would mostly require a top MBA or MSFin program.

Most MACCs have an Audit and Tax concentration. Mine has Audit, Tax, Financial Services, and Info Systems options. I will most likely choose Tax if that makes any difference.

Hope to hear from others who have done or are considering this degree.

-I originally majored in Accounting, failed Intermediate Accounting, switched majors to Primary Education, switched major back to Accounting and ended up double majoring in Accounting and Finance
-I was always a good student >3.8 GPA through HS, and first year of college. My dad was terminally ill (Multi System Atrophy) and I went through SEVERE depression and alchoholism. Almost failed out of college and had no confidence. My overall GPA when I graduated was 2.8 even tho my last 4 semesters in school were almost all A's. Got a job as a Credit Analyst and started with a bunch of people who were in my classes in college who always did really good in school. I completely out performed them at work and got promoted really quick, so I decided that I wanted to go back to school and get a "fresh start".
-I graduate in December and our Accounting career fair is the beginning of September. I'm really hoping to knock this career fair out of the park and stand out. My 2 best friends work at Deloitte and have referred me so hopefully that will lead to something.
-It's not a top program by any means but for the price, location, and the fact they let me in with my terrible undergrad performance I feel very lucky to go to school here.

Basically I realized I screwed up in my undergrad and hoped the MPA program would put me on the right track. So far I feel like it has. I'm also currently studying for FAR and AUD and plan on taking those in October/November.

Let me know if you would like more detailed info.
