Texas Rep. Ron Paul has long been regarded as a somewhat entertaining distraction in his two presidential races over the past four years.

But, on the eve of the Ames Straw Poll, the first major organizing test of the 2012 Republican presidential race, there is a strain of thinking that Paul could seriously challenge the likes of Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann and former Minnesota governor Tim Pawlenty for supremacy on Saturday.

But see:

There is little expectation that a Paul victory at Ames — even if did come to pass — would mean much of anything in the race to come.

I started to watch it and didn't get into it. Really only got one episode in but it was just too hard to follow without paying attention.

That's been what's held me back. Someone lent me the whole series, and I'm a decent way into season one after having borrowed it for a long time, but you can't multi-task while you do it. You pretty much have to sit and focus on it, which I rarely do while watching TV.

Hopefully everyone at the Straw Poll who isn't voting for Ron Paul is going to be writing in Rick Parry.

missed what turned out to be a fun party because i went to that home poker game.

6 hours of poker. $5 profit. ughhh.

ricky romero killin it for my fantasy baseball playoffs. got harden and willis to close out the weekend but lost brad hand's sunday start =(

romero threw 10 straight balls in the first inning. and then whooped. Jered Weaver, meanwhile, gave up 8 runs in 4 innings against the Jays bench. CY!

I thought that sport ended once preseason football started.

My condolences that you root for the Mariners, so you don't understand that this is the best time for baseball when your team is actually good.

I'm not a Royals fan. I know what it is to have my team be good this time of year. Mariners in the pennant race in a Sunday afternoon game loses out to an early season Seahawks game every time, unless it's the very last day of the season with something on the line.

Yeah I won't go as far as dk on the preseason ****. The novelty of seeing your team back on the field for the first time is cool, but then by the end of preseason I'm always saying, "WTF? They're still playing these? Give me real football." The last week is particularly worthless since the real college stuff starts up that week.
08-13-2011 , 07:40 PM
4th one is useless but Id take the first three. First for novelty factor, the second because its the first time a lot of good players play, and the third is close to a full game.

One thing that annoys me about the preseason is everyone's insistence on thinking that the results mean anything at all. They don't just not mean very much; they mean NOTHING. NOTHING. And yes that includes week three. I realize that Denny Green disagrees with me, but he's an idiot.

My strongest motivation to root for the Seahawks in preseason games is so that I don't have to listen to other Seahawk fans overreacting and saying, "OMG what's wrong with our team?!?" if they lose. The other night Seattle wins, because players who will be cut by the Seahawks outplayed players who will be cut by the Chargers in the 4th quarter. People somehow think THAT is meaningful. What in the blue **** is wrong with everyone?

Acceptable things to react to in the preseason:
1. Injuries
2. Nothing else

I hate having to trot out this rant every ****ing August, therefore I end up resenting preseason.

I was going to say in a previous post that even ESPN has called it "fake football." Yet, I didn't want to seem like I was trolling you since you seemed excited about the preseason.

Final scores obviously dont matter but you can still learn some from watching how the starting units play. Carolinas was awful and couldnt score if they got five downs, while the Packers were unstoppable last year.

But teams don't game plan for these. They might put together an opening offensive script, but that's it. This is why you'll often have the rookie QBs who are expecting to start look good in the preseason and then immediately look WAY worse the second the real action starts. You can maybe assess the trenches a bit, and you can assess kickers and punters pretty well, but that's about all the predictive value I can see.

The thing is that by the late part of the regular season, most teams look pretty dissimilar from what they looked like in weeks 1 and 2 of the regular season, let alone the preseason.

Woke up at 9am for an 11am playoff street hockey game, we won so we played another at 2pm, exhausted now. About to go to work, will prob stay until 1-2am or so.

Just another week or two and then my life will be back to normal.

last year carolina failed to score a td in all four games, surely it was more than mere coincidence that they ended up with the woat offense in the regular season too. preseason doesnt mean as much as some people make it out to be and doesnt mean much for proven vets, but its not completely worthless either.
