A break from study is a good idea? A break from study is a good idea?

Hi everyone,

I'm 23 years old studying computer science in France, i'm supposed to finish my studies by end 2017 but lately i started thinking of taking a break year as i never did this (always went to college for the past 4 years) while in the same time playing poker for paying the rent and everything as my half-time job, getting more addicted in a way but enjoying it and i defenitly think that it is perfect to make money without a boss.

I want to get advice from you guys who did something simillar or who want to help me as this is a hard decision for me as my entourage don't understand that and keeps repeating me that it is bad.

My guts tell me to take the 1 year break and come to finish the studies 100 % after that, i personnaly want to playfull time poker, learn new stuff and do the experience for myself and i feel like it is the right time to do so. The fact that going to college gives me some kind of a comfort zone, i weight the benefits (personal, material) and the negatives (quiting school even for a year, the deception that i will create around me (my family takes that as a deception))..

I know a lot of people went throught a simillar scenario so what are your thoughts about it.I know it has to be my decision in the end but it can really help me to get extra views so feel free

Excuse my english i'm not a native.

Have a nice day !

I don't know how it is in France, but it's a very personal consideration.

Know that you will be falling behind your peers who go straight to work. However, there is absolutely no substitute for having a retirement year in your 20s.

Hi thx for the reply,

I talked to many people inside and outside of poker and I think it is a good idea overall just like you guys I know i will get behind my friends but i don't really care i have to do it for myself before everything else and it is gonna be a good experience whether i run good or bad ..

That'll be a fun resume gap to try to explain.

At least in the states, extended poker breaks and comp Sci don't go well together. See the programming forum

Don't know i just tell myself for now that recruters won't ask for the gap but may be because i did not many interviews is it really that important?

So i decided to take the break year away from study,

It is not much but i want to thank you for the help, when i finally did everything to get to that break i felt really good and excited and i could not imagine how bad would it be if i didnt just take my balls to get from the study comforte zone and do what feels right for the moment

So thx all

If Comp Science is anything like Civ Engineering in challenges you must meet, the biggest objective would not be falling behind rather it would be losing track of principles, methedologies and study habits/knowledge. This should be the biggest consideration, is that when you go back will you be able to pick it up again. If no, then it will potentially cost you more than 12 months and more money.
