I'm doing the mentor program at my law school and am a pretty horrible match with my mentee, at least as far as our law school experiences. He's stressed about everything, spends 10 hours at the law school everyday (even early in the semester), had his outlines done weeks ago, reads everything assigned, and doesn't drink.

LOL. I've signed up for the mentor/mentee program twice. Each year they've assigned me two people. I have yet to meet one of them.

Also, I hereby designate this the official "Law School BS Chatter Thread" because the other thread is ungodly long and the title isn't right.

Re: Law School

thought about writing up my advice/thoughts about the (CA) bar exam. I'm pretty sure no one would read it now, but it might come in handy for the 3Ls in May. anyone interested in this?

I thought the OOT December low content thread was the law school bs thread.

Also before I put Dschrmiedreu on ignore I was doing a pretty good job of derailing the NBA Season thread in SE into discussions about res ipsa loquitur and such, but we weren't able to reach critical mass there.

Can you include the first months at a firm? Please go into detail about confidential client matters, proprietary info, etc.

I'd read both! (shocking, right?)

Thankfully the MA bar is a lot easier that the CA bar, but even still, whereas failure in past years meant embarrassment and taking it again while still working, not sure firms will bother keeping people around now.

how was taking another states bar?

did you do a bar prep class or just study on your own? if you did barprep, then do you think just getting the books from someone else would have been sufficient?

how much harder is the bar than the average law school final?

what was your study strategy, how many hours a day, etc.

my law school curriculum didn't focus on bar preparation at all for any state, so taking the bar in a different state didn't particularly hinder me. law school didn't really prepare me for the bar exam, other than having a foundation in basic 1L curriculum stuff.

like most people, I took Barbri. I didn't take PMBR. Barbri sucks in a lot of ways, but I'd make the same choice if I had to go back in time and do it again.

getting a complete set of bar study materials probably would have been sufficient for me if I could have stayed motivated enough to make myself study. taking a course has the benefit of giving you a "class" to go to regularly.

apples and oranges

my strategy was basically just to follow the daily schedule Barbri gave me. I ended up completing about 1/2-2/3 of everything they told us to do.

I went to Barbri "class" (i.e. watch a video and take notes) for 3-4 hours 5 days a week and then probably spent an additional 4 hrs/day studying on my own.

I've been working for 6 weeks and I'm basically still getting my bearings. almost everything I do I'm doing for the first time. as compared to summer associate, hours are longer, lunches are shorter and expectations are higher. I'm still happy with my decision to go to law school and into biglaw. ask me for an update in a few months.

Re: Law School

On that note, when do guys think I should take the MPRE? I have to take a professional responsibility class at some point, probably fall of 3L year, and was just going to take it then. Is there a reason to try to get it done before then?

Re: Law School

any time after 1L. check the rules, but I think 2Ls can take it. should only take up like a day and a half of your time. I'd save spring of 3L as a buffer in case you do fail it. I took it fall of 3L and that was perfect for me.

Re: Law School

I took it Nov. 3L year. I'll let you know next week how it went. It's harder than advertised, but still not that bad.

I took it last month, too. I probably failed.
