Well I'm Catholic so I am not going to mind being in that environment. If your only reason against their law school is that you don't like Catholicism then I am not worried.

Ya but think about connections (being serious here).

Firms with heavy Catholic ties are going to gobble up grads of this crazy ass school.

I think I was more worried about the fact that the school is moving 1500 miles, professors are quitting and tried blocking the move with formal complaints to the ABA, last year even 3rd yr students who would have to repeat a semester were dropping out because of it, etc. The fact that it is 4th tier and still costs more than Harvard doesn't help.

FWIW I've gone to a Catholic school for high school/college/law school.

I'm sure that it might have its advantages here, so score one in the "pro" column vs. the laundry list of fatal "cons"

Anyone have any stories or info about Villanova, Temple, Richmond or Pitt they'd like to share? Researching all 4 of those schools pretty heavily at the moment.

I'd speculate that a lot of the Catholics in Florida are Cuban with their own insular connections, so even relying on widespread religious discrimination in hiring might fail you.

I'm Irish Catholic myself, fwiw.

Richmond employs the author of my Civ Pro textbook, which was awful. Go there and punch him for being a dick.

I heard about the planned move to Florida back when I was living in Ann Arbor, that was in 2001 so I doubt it was a big suprise, just a major inconvenience. The big pro for Ave Maria is that they are offering me $ and I don't know if a 50-100 ranked school is worth 100k debt. But the equation will be simplified if every other school rejects me

If you don't mind, what law school did you go to?

I just remember reading things a lot more recently than 2001 that the vast majority of the faculty were pissed about the move. I'd just be afraid to be the guinea pig for a new school in a new area.

I go to BC.

Eyedea- According to a blog I just read, apparently the dean purged the dissenting faculty away and now everybody is on board. They are even going to keep their accreditation. They haven't moved yet but I think they open in FL this fall.

Do yourself a favor, study your ass off and retake the LSAT...if you can even get a 160, your future will more than likely be drastically altered for the better

I should have chosen deadmoneywalking at toplawschools.com. Still I think poker players can identify with each other pretty effectively.

So out of 12 people in my legal practice workshop deal, 1 girl won the NALSA national moot court, this other dude just won the Jessup international moot court, and I just had to have a meeting with the instructor where he told me if I don't rewrite the brief and attempt to use the correct bluebook cites I'm going to fail.

Also, anyone going down to UVA next weekend for softball?

If you say my dad has a solo practice and I've always wanted to take it over OR I've always wanted to clerk for a federal judge and then become an AUSA in the SDNY, the level of our enthusiasm for Ave Maria might differ.

He's saying you aren't going to get a very financially rewarding job. So either get into a better school, don't go to law school, or resign yourself to low paying job (which may be ok for you, I don't know).

I'd be worried about getting any job at all from that school. T4, in a new area, and that area is pretty far away from any major metropolitan areas?

Not to mention since its new in general a complete lack of alumni, a lot of ones that do exist are 1) pissed at the school's move and 2) not yet in hiring positions.

So, unless Domino's needs some in-house counsel, or Bush gets reelected, out of luck.

Oh okay. To answer:

I never want to live in NYC, "Biglaw" is really not too interesting to me. I am not obviously in the Ivy clique that leads to scotus or the US attorney's office. Random firm in the yellow pages is fine with me.

how important are letters of recommendation from professors in the application?

i have a GPA of 3.1 but dont really know any professors. all my classes are either lectures where the professor miiiight know my face and whether or not i'm an idiot when i participate (which i dont often do) or classes of 15-20 kids where the professor will know my face but very little about me, my capacity, etc.

i'm sure someone has gone through this before. what do you do?
