Some of them do some of them don't. However, I find it a bit hard to believe everybody's friends/majority of their friends are of the above. I go to a state school in a very urban and poor area, so I feel rather qualified to say that. And even those who do get educational loans, in which case they can pay back over x amount of years and are not nearly as thrifty. Even going to a state school with a high percentage of minorities and low income families, I see less than 1% of the people as you describe. Their parents help them out the majority of the time, and it is due to irresponsible spending that leads to that.
Hey - I didn't describe them, Fiji did. And no, it is not offensive to me in any way. But, Fiji is talking about kids who go to Cornell. Tuition for out-of-state is probably a shade under 50K and they probably are doing considerably more schoolwork than the average state schooler - cutting into possible work time. I think this is a pretty obvious recipe for I DON'T HAVE ANY MONIES!!

The average 20-21 year old is in debt up to their eyeballs. I'm not including the ones who's Mommy's and Daddy's left them a pile of money either.

well if your looking for the "average" 20 year olds money your in the wrong place. Most of us that play online poker obviously have extra money or we wouldn't be gambling. I'm much better off than my friends and I only have about 2k in my bank account for spending. The other 20 year olds on here prob have 5 or 10k though.

I come from a rather ghetto area and still do not experience that much, I'm very surprised if other people find it otherwise.

Edit: I do not mean to sound offensive in any way and realize I am fortunate enough to get help from my parents, but from my experience it was very rare for someone to have to pay for everything without any support at all. I take out a large amount in loans every year and the excess 2-3k me or my parents pay every semester. That is what I felt most people's situations were. Those who didn't have money are those who don't have a job, and thus have no money. Those who have a job usually have money.
You have to understand that alot of middle-class teenagers do not work full time. Instead, they get money from their parents to go to school, while they work like 20 hours a week. 20 x 10 = $200 a week...which is usually gone on one Saturday.

Teens simply do not save money

How exactly do you know this? Especially considering you've only been on here a few weeks...

Re: how much money does the average 20-21 year old have?

b/c i know how much money the avg 20 year old has and if you are playing poker online you obviously have more money to blow then someone who doesn't. Most 20 year olds are making 10k a year and paying rent and bills and car payments and all that junk. If you are on here posting all the time and playing online poker you prob aren't working or at least not that much. I play micro limits and have like a 600 roll online. Not many 20 year olds just have 600 bucks to throw away. I dont "know" that the kids on here have tons of money but i would bet it is more than an avg if you sampled 10000 kids across the country.

Re: how much money does the average 20-21 year old have?

The average 20 year old will basically have nothing they earned themselves. I had a lawn mowing busniess for 6 years with a partner in high school and while I put away $7k, he spent pretty much everything. Not many teenagers and college kids are savers. I luckily get some money from my parents, but I try to save as much as possible from summer jobs. Most of my friend plan on spending the $4-5k they make over the summer within the first semester of school.

Re: how much money does the average 20-21 year old have?

I feel the majority of the people who get a fulltime job in the summer and save (i.e. non poker players) and work part time jobs during the school year make more money than most poker players. My few poker playing friends here feel like the money from poker can easily be won back, and they didn't work for it, so spend it a lot easier. Plus they are not very good in the first place, so the first downswing that comes kills them. 4-5k in the summer, plus about 600 a month for the other 9 months in school comes out to almost 10k. Most poker players do not make that much.

This is true of a large part of the population, but might be more true of the college age kids because they dont have a husband/wife or kids to support.

In general, people are stupid.

I've been a somewhat compulsive saver since I was 14.

It's only after poker that I've been able to loosen up a bit a actually spend money.
