*** how do u get a good job *** how do u get a good job

I didnt want to say while I was still in the running / if i got the job, but it was a non-engineer position at google that seemed really kickass...and I didnt get it (found out today) .

That kind of job doesnt really exist anywhere else. Not really sure where else Ill be a good match other than these economic consulting firms, but entering the corporate world of billable hours seems pretty soul-draining. I'd love to get some sort of statistics-related but not super-technical job out on the west coast. I guess I still have another 6 months to look but I feel behind a lot of my peers.

Thanks for the advice about follow-ups btw.

Dude. It's your FIRST. JOB. You're GETTING. INTERVIEWS. Welcome to the lingering recession. You're doing as well as can be expected.

i've got a moral question

I had an interview yesterday for a role as an assistant commercial property manager at a medium sized real estate firm.

i think it went quite well. I have one semester left as a uni student and getting this 3-4 day a week job will count as a subject for me which is really handy.

I do however have plans to get over to brazil for the world cup (preferably 2 weeks minimum) and possibly take further time off depending on my job situation.

Should i be lucky enough to be offered this position i get some real job experience that should put me in good stead in the future and give me a 6 month experience headstart should i need to find find another job after said travels.

so my moral dilemma is whether i accept the job should i be lucky enough to be selected or keep my current job, which will always be there given im working in a family business?

Yo I just remembered about this thread.

Lol, i admit I was very naive and more than a little douchey. I wasn't prepared for the job search at all. Interviewing is definitely a skill that you have to practice, you have to know how to not **** up and how to be fake in the right ways, which sucks because you want to think that you could just be honest and everything will work out, but that's not really how things work most of the time. for example, I was very far in the interview process as a business analyst at an NFL team. I KILLED my interview with the HR person, but when I spoke to the hiring manager I didn't wow him because I was just in "don't **** up" mode, so as a result (because he had all the hiring power), they went with someone else. So you have to learn from painful experiences like that. I ended up finding work as a (data) analyst out in California, which I'm very pleased with since I am getting decent pay (could be better. not making as much as some of my friends but my job also seems way better), the people in the office seemed happy and friendly, and I am working normal hours which I value a lot (shoudl be typical 830 to 5 job). and I really like this job because it was one of the rare ones where i DIDNT have to BS at all, and in fact the firm isn't a typical consulting firm that tells the clients what they want to hear -- they do objective analysis.

Thanks to everyone who tried to help even if I was too stubborn to listen.

edit: just reread OP and wow I was really douchey, but I was feeling a lot of pressure and frustration at the time

And take advantage of your college's career center because after you graduate you won't be able to in the same capacity.

Also, a stats degree is good in that it's a technical major, but if you don't have the technical skills to go along with it, it's not as impressive. Otherwise why be a stats major? Maybe in the interviews talk about or show a project you've done. Play up that you are capable of doing things that a non-quant person isn't.

As an example, I majored in math/econ but took some stats as well. I picked up some sql, latex and stata knowledge along the way. I did some very basic querying and regression analysis to put together a research project. But it gave me something to use as a talking point that not everyone else can use. As much as your work experience and education play a role, if you can show you are passionate about something that's unique that can be what puts you over the edge.
this post is very legit

good stats, but lack of interviews = poor cover letter/resume. work on those.

Hi, I think getting a good job requires self confidence, hard work and skills. Not everyone has been granted with a nice job at the start. However, if you are fit for it and efficient , you will be getting a very good one also in the future.

Well, you archive a good corporate level jobs if your education is excellent and from reputed institutes, or else start small, work excellent, take promotions, and one day you will see heights.

If you have no work history at a real job in a related field then you are not really valuable.

In that case you will be basically on a level playing field vs someone who is your age with no college, that worked their way up from the bottom and has been working there for 5+ years at a medium level.

Yourself being a fresh newbie with no prior experience is such a gamble and you don't have anything to offer hardly. Most people barley end up working for what their degrees intended.

CLIFFS:

Enough, I dont even know what I just said (its 6am and 5hrs past my bedtime).. My advice, get a medium'ish job in a field that you want, and WORK yourself up
It will take time, it sucks, I hate trying to satisfy and suck dicks of creepy bosses. That is why during school I would work on my own company/ inventing business plans for homework assignments. You could also work at a job for a few months and learn how their business operates and start your own gig/ copy it. Now I am a entrepreneur and have not sucked a bosses dick for 5 years now, feels good man.

Hey dude, welcome to the real world. You are in your last year of university but it sounds as if you do not have any actual experience (internships). There must be a reason why some kids are getting offers and you are not. Speaking with them to see what they did throughout their 4 years may provide some insight.

Look into new grad programs many companies offer. You need to get your foot in the door and get some real experience.

Attend every interview opportunity even if you feel it is a job "below" you. Even if you do not land the job the interview experience will help you out in the future.

You are asking if you should follow up/say thank you in an email?? Statements like this make you sound extremely green. Use resources online available to you to see what others think then decide for yourself what you should do in your situation.

Start looking into what additional certifications you can get and start working towards these. Now a days, work experience trumps your 3.6 gpa and as it stands you really don't have any.

NETWORK NETWORK NETWORK, i cannot stress this enough but you will be surprised how many job openings you find out about through your friends and contacts which are not posted on the internet. Do not be afraid to send your resume with a cover letter through to companies general mailbox even if a position is not currently open.

Good Luck.

In order to catch the attention of a potential employer you simply have to display your capacity for a certain position. Hell, they may not even have the position open, but if you did so much as send them a piece of work demonstrating what value you have within the company, a piece thats centred upon what you will do in this particular role, then thats what will leave an impression.

If there are 100 applicants and 1 of them sends a piece of work that contributes to a project that the company is currently working on (showing that they've done their research), thats what will get them an interview. And say they're not quite cut out for the job, the employer might be so impressed by the quality of work that they might offer them a similar position, or a position at a similar company.

You just have to show them that you are of value to their company, that you are innovative and passionate what they do. Its hard work but it pays off.

Hello,

Apologies if this is a bit off topic but this may be of interest to individuals reading this thread.

There is a job vacancy within the Poker team at one of the world’s largest online gaming companies, it will be an administrative position but a great entry to a career in Poker or online gaming in general.

The successful candidate will need to be analytical, logical, collaborative, hard working and ambitious. Knowledge of Poker is an advantage but not 100% necessary, knowledge of Excel and data analysis will be especially advantageous.

The position is based in Gibraltar (At the bottom of Spain) so would require a relocation in most situations. From my experience, Gibraltar/Spain are both fantastic places to live if you are a nightlife person or if you are big into outdoor rec, not to mention the weather is excellent pretty much all year round.

If you are interested, please send your CV and covering letter on why you want the position to Gibraltar.jobs@bet365.com. There is some more general information at this link.

Of course, if there are any questions, they can go to the above address also, alternatively PM me. The closing date for applications is 16th Jan.

Many thanks
Ben

I ended up quitting my job a few weeks ago. Left on good terms with everyone.

The work was extremely tedious data management / excel updating type of ****, I was denied a raise at evaluations despite my excellent work. snubbed on my bonus as well, so I decided to get out before I was wrapped up in another evaluation.

I've pretty much given up on finding another job in the bay, though there are a couple things cooking that could potentially work out. Hoping to get into this graduate program in business analytics so I can get more interesting work and delay the corporate grind.
