What's your source? I've never been blocked from a porn site.

Yes some of our games are censored but who cares lol. I think in one game they weren't allowed to show a character injecting a drug or something. But that was before we had the R18+ video game classification. So I assume that now we will get all games and the ones that used to be censored before will be R18+.

Australia had plans to put in country-wide parental filters on the Internet a few years back. I don't think it ever happened.

I also don't know how serious it was. If some idiot MP introduced a private member's bill with zero chance of becoming law the media loving a censorship story would make the threat much more real then it actually was.

I'm fairly sure that is what Gus is referring to and if so I'm not surprised nobody else is aware of it as this was at least five years ago and maybe closer to ten years ago.

Lol. Lived in Australia my whole life. Never heard of this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Australia

stuff is generally filtered/removed before it's available to the public hence why you've probably never heard of it.

edit:

banned video games - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...s_in_Australia
banned films - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of...d_in_Australia

So 20 video games and a few movies that have been banned warrant this statement?

Australia could be so elite if it wasn't for them being so conservative and their ridiculous lolbad censorship laws and probably some other ridiculous laws that I don't really know about.
You do have a fair point though. Not being able to watch a few necrophilic and rape movies really does lower my standard of living. I was pretty happy here until I found out what I was missing out on.
07-08-2013 , 08:45 AM
That wasn't my statement.
07-08-2013 , 08:57 AM
lolgus: australia has massive censoring
otty: wat? theres like a couple banned video games but who cares
henry: there was a bill that could block the whole internet a couple years back
otty: i never heard of that
hugefail: heres a list of games that are banned!
people: uh ok

dk,

i'm assuming you're confused so here's some help.

censoring includes film and games, i posted links so people can see examples of the censoring.

on wikipedia, you can click links to take you to more related topics e.g. internet censorship.

----

that was obv sarcastic (you probably missed it) but i'm actually shocked how you read the situation like that.

you have 59k posts too, dont you think you should take a break?
07-08-2013 , 09:08 AM
Yeah ok we get it. Nobody cares. Gus was right that there is some censorship bit not so much that it would affect anyone in anyway.

Moving on now.
07-08-2013 , 11:09 AM
I've seen most of those movies listed. As someone who is desensitized to just about anything that can be in a movie, Cannibal Holocaust and Human Centipede 2 are two of the sickest abominations I've ever seen. No one is missing out on people getting raped and eaten alive.

serbian film is the pinnacle of movies

In 2008, a web filter was proposed that would have potentially blocked as many as 10,000 sites by placing them on a blacklist, but years of criticism from industry, political and public groups -- including Anonymous " declaring war" on it, and Wikileaks publishing the confidential blacklist to show it included some sites that were only, contrary to government assurances, subjectively offensive -- led to the idea being dropped in November 2012

That might have been the end of it, but no -- instead of going through legislative channels, it looks like web censorship is back, and this time it's taking advantage of a legal loophole. On 4 April, more than 1,200 sites were suddenty unavailable to Australian web users

Didn't know about that, but again, has zero effect on my quality of life. Can't imagine being upset about these kinds of things. Slippery slope I know, but currently so far from remotely beginning to effect my life that I am fine with it.

The way Gus phrased it was suggesting things like Facebook were banned and 'there were probably some other draconian laws'. In reality 1200 out of maybe a trillion? websites are banned (most of which are probably kiddie porn) and a few completely ****ed up games/movies.

Actually I looked at the list of games expecting to see some completely ****ed up stuff I've never heard of and was surprised to see a lot of mainstream games from established studios:

Blitz: The League (oh noes you can shoot up your players with steroids)
Left 4 Dead 2 (oh noes zombies)
Postal 1/2 (oh noes violence)
Saints Row IV (oh noes violence)
Syndicate (oh noes violence)
The Witcher 2 (oh noes sex)

That's not an acceptable level of censorship for a first world country.
07-08-2013 , 05:17 PM
oh look interest in my on topic post about censorhip in australia

fu dkwoat.

also i was surprised too, im pretty sure gta 5 will face some form of censorship

Wait what lol. I own this game.

You can get Saints Row 4 as well...

I am so ****ing confused now.

Maybe they released censored versions. Either way it should bother you that you can't play games that millions of people in the US and UK among other first world nations are happily enjoying, because you have an overbearing government.

(USA does too, in other ways, see NSA spying, I'm in no way saying this is exclusive to Australia - I'm saying you should not be okay with it)

Last edited by goofyballer; 07-08-2013 at 06:53 PM. Reason: yeah, wiki article says L4D2 was censored, SR4 is planning censored release
07-08-2013 , 06:58 PM
im guessing the "censored" content amounts to seconds worth of cutscenes
07-08-2013 , 07:22 PM
dk,

no, they remove certain features/playable content

Source?

I know in an old GTA game they removed the syringes or something. But it was just blurred out. I mean this really isn't affecting me in any way. I can still get all these games. lol.

ALso, I think this may have been before an R18+ rating was introduced for video games. But obviously a lot of game manufacturers would prefer to let everyone play it and just censor it slightly (like GTA did with syringes).

in GTA:SA they removed the hot coffee cheat.
in GTA:VC they removed the ability to use prostitutes.

it's in the links i provided

also my position isnt that australia isn't censorship heavy -- i'm just providing info.

This doesn't affect my enjoyment of the game at all. Yeah I know you are, Goofy's getting all emotional that we should have a problem with it.

If they removed the ****ing guns from the game, I'd be getting angry. Otherwise, whatever. We have to pay about double you guys have to anyway. You get used to being so far away from everything.
