Re: Econ Majors!!!

An econ degree is also an excellent major for students that might be interested in law school (we average higher LSAT scores than pre-law majors).

Still considering it, but I know there's already a huge surplus of lawyers out there and that makes it a lot less lucrative.

As far as math goes, yeah; most econ degrees don't require advanced calculus (because as an undergrad you learn the nuts and bolts of econ at a conceptual level), but grad school is a different story. If you apply to a good grad school in econ, they'll expect to see as much advanced math as an math student would take.

I hope to get at least a Master's degree in either econ or finance after graduating though. At the very least, I'll have a BS and a good employment background to fall back on.

BTW, you guys do know that we study game theory in econ right? Word on the street is, knowledge of some of that might help in poker.
FYP.

To those even considering with any degree of seriousness doing postgraduate econ/finance, double major in math. Seriously.

Re: Econ Majors!!!

I just took topics of corporate finance in the econ dept and I think that's the area I want to go into. Do you guys have any suggestions of what kind of finance jobs/internships I should be looking for?

Just to further support this, every single econ TA I became close with had either a bs in math or something + ms in math.

IDK (I live in CZK). There are two major econ courses here. One is supposed to be really math heavy, the other isnt (I go to the second one). I assume its equivavelnt to BA.

We have mandatory Calculus, Statistics, Intro to Econometrics and Applied Econometrics. We can opt to take Calc 2 another Econometrics course and Applied Econometrics II)

In comparison to the other program its nothing, but I dont think that there exist an Economics major that doesnt require any Calculus at all

Re: Econ Majors!!!

Double major in something if you want to go this route. But really it's better to ask yourself what you want to DO and then choose the degree which gives you the best set of marketable skills and the best opportunities towards that.

Unless you are extremely special (like will be admitted to Harvard/Yale/etc law special) this "there's always law school" line of thinking is incredibly dangerous in this market.

Re: Econ Majors!!!

I'm an Econ major, taking Calc 2 now at a CC and Calc 3 next semester at my 4 year. I called in to ask what to do to get the system to let me reg for Calc 3 and was asked "You're an economics major why do you need Calculus 3?"

yeah that's the vibe I've been getting from the law thread, that you need to be 100% committed and actually want to become a lawyer. I got a few more years to think about it though, + I would be going to school in canada, not really sure what the industry is like these days.

Re: Econ Majors!!!

Do places like the red cross or the UN have positions for say a person with a BA in econ? I want to end up doing some sort of humanitarian work after I graduate/am finished with teaching English as a foreign language.

I'm majoring in Econ because I find the subject quite fascinating and I like the type of mindset that comes with it.

Re: Econ Majors!!!

From the ECON majors I've talked to, it's really hard to get an actual econ job. Most places looking for business type majors usually allow econ majors to apply as well though. The most well off econ major I've talked to was working for Deloitte even though his job was totally unrelated to his degree. Nonetheless you may want to look into consulting. I've started researching it more myself and it seems very interesting and can cover a wide range of topics.
