The Bristol student poker thread

Seen quite a few threads recently related to poker around the Bristol area.

So this thread is for all at Bristol, UWE or anyone near by (Bath, Cardiff ect) are also welcome.

Anything about the Gala harbourside can go here, along with any home games, meet ups or anything poker/student related.

Can I join? Student at Exeter but my bro goes to UWE so I kinda have links. Might make a trip up to Gala if there are any decent tourneys coming up.

Sure, alls welcome.

I'll post some details for the gala later, tourn shedule and cash games ect.

There's a 1ner freeze on January 29th, 45 min clocks, 2-day event, 10k garuntee. That value can't be missed imo.

Hate the structures and not keen on traveling into town. I love the play at these things but I'm sticking to stars for the minute. Although if you want to have a meetup before one starts or something then I'm down for that.

Re: The Bristol student poker thread

I live in Gloucestershire at the moment, but am at Cardiff Uni during term times. I have played in the old £10 triple chance and the £30 bounty tournament with a pretty good record (probably cashing in around 33%), both tournaments were pretty soft especially the triple chance as players just look to shove at the early stages with random draws/weak hands to double up early. The cash tables also seem to be reasonably soft, in Gala Cardiff there are no tournaments and the cash table is even softer with the whole table generally being loose-passive. I am yet to play on the ROE table in Bristol but understand that to not be of a good standard either.

U a reg at Gala?? This your first year at uni?

Was at UWE until last year and used to play cash 2-3 times a week. Am pretty good friends with Punnat and Andreas, should imagine if you have been in there quite alot you will come across these 2.

I'm 2nd year atm, probs only went about 20 times last year and mostly just played the afternoon tournys, didn't play that much cash as i was staying on campus and it's difficult to get back.

Sure i'd recognize those you mention but can't put any names to faces, i wasn't really a reg.

Hoping to go a bit more this year as i live in city center.

I go to UWE, i'm in my 2nd year doing accounting and finance and i'm currently going for Supernova Elite this year on stars.

Played cash at the gala a few times during first year and yeah the games were super soft, but playing like 20 hands an hour is depressing.

Re: The Bristol student poker thread

Just adding myself to the pool, I live and study in Bath, played the Gala omaha game a few times (plays pretty big, its 1/2 but I managed to swing -£2500 into +£1100 in under 5 hours once).

Im hoping to start the occasional home game over 2012, maybe a smallish cash game (25/50, 50/1), and if I get the go-ahead from my wife I'll be going to Bristol now and again for a tournament or two. I can offer lifts for those who are roughly on my way to the casino.

Re: The Bristol student poker thread

Hey 2+2,

Thought i'd post a little something on behalf of university of bristol poker society. We run a £5 optional buy in hold em tournament on mondays from 7 for UoB students at Bundy's in clifton. Theres usually one or two tables of cash games being played later into the night, which non-UoB people are welcome to join although the stakes are only 5p 10p, which i'd guess is a little lower than most people here would be interested in. We also run saturday tournaments in which we play a variety of games.

Other plans for the year include trips to gala, dusk till dawn and the UKSPC. Think thats most of it covered, if anyones interested and wants to know more i'll send you here:

Re: The Bristol student poker thread

Im UWE alumni but work at Bristol Uni.

I used to play in Gala loads but now life events have come along and take a priority and I currently play every 2 months or so.

I have a pretty decent record in there - my win rate in MTTs is around 1 in 20 with 80ish avg fields and I final table around a third of games.

Bristol is fortunate in that we have plenty of choices in games. I'll be keeping an eye on this thread though to see who I recognise and what people recommend.
