I don't possibly see how the bolded is LESS awkward, even if you're just in high school.
If you can't say hi without it being awkward, your odds are beyond low.

Re: SL "Ask Out A Girl" Thread
So I went out last night. First a mate's bday, after this bar, quite a young crowd. Was too superwasted though due to losing drinking games excessively, and didn't even try to approach a girl.
Anyway, I do remember thinking "There are absolutely NO attractive girls in here", contrary to when I went out in the city in which I study.
Was wondering: what is your gameplan when there aren't that many attractive girls, do you lower your standards and try some, or just have a fun evening regardless of female contact.

Does screwing an unattractive girl sound more fun to you than just having a good time with your friends? Answers to that question will vary from person to person, it's just a personal choice. You shouldn't feel like you HAVE TO be running game every time you're in a bar though.

Obviously share that opinion with you, and I wouldn't go for an unattractive girl. Just thinking, would you be more lenient(sp?), like, going for 6's.

a lot of the time i just go out to have fun with my friends, and if a girl is around that shows interest in me, ill entertain the option. but why bother wasting your time on girls that you dont care for when you could be having fun?
(unless you just really really really wanna get laid that night)

Re: SL "Ask Out A Girl" Thread
whats gross about that? haha
to keep it on track, me and said girl were very cuddly during the party at her place and holding hands etc, some kissing but not like making out.
hung out with her today to watch the cowboys game and she was giving me a lot of **** about it. nothing much more to update.

Do you have any classes with her? Or any other common ground? You're going to need something to start a conversation with beyond "hi." It sounds like you have a common friend at least, that can be common ground. "Hey, I've seen you around with XXXX, don't think I've gotten the chance to meet you though. I'm XXXX."
Then just go from there. Talk about something you have in common, ask her about herself, etc. Don't go in with some far-reaching agenda, just talk to her and see if she's worth asking out to begin with. And you definitely don't have to ask her out in the first conversation, in fact it's often going to be preferable not to do that right away when you're just approaching cold like this and you see her around enough anyway.
