Even though the same corporation owns it all, each department has their own budget. The WSOP is told "you're at the Rio." Then, the guy in charge of the WSOP has to negotiate how much he's paying from his budget to the budgets of the convention space, food and beverage, etc. If you want to rent out convention space at a casino, they have the full price rates, but you usually can negotiate down from there, often by a lot. Per the rumor mill, WSOP was paying top price for everything, because the person running each department at the Rio knew they had a captive customer, who could not shop around and get a better deal somewhere else.

The pit at the Rio does better in June and July than any other months each year. If you owned the WSOP, and went to another property to negotiate a deal to hold it there, don't you think that the pit at that casino would be more than happy to help with some of your costs? Knowing that you are bringing them a ton of action for 1.5 months? As far as I know, the casino at the Rio kicks in nothing to the WSOP, even though it's presence makes them a lot of money.

All of this is a big part of the reason that tournament fees went up so much when the WSOP moved from Binions. At Binions, it's family-owned, and they didn't care about the budget of each individual department. They could tell food and beverage to give out free food right-and-left, and if the restaurants lost money during the WSOP, no big deal. The owners knew that loss was nothing compared to the gains elsewhere. But in corporations, each department head is responsible for their own budget, and is expected to turn a profit.

Cheers, Greg Raymer (FossilMan)
I would be pretty shocked if the WSOP pays precisely what an equivalent convention would pay per square foot, however I generally agree with you. Poker concerns tend to get the shaft inside casinos. And I know the "paying full price" for a variety of services scenario does in fact happen in at least one other major venue in Vegas.

That being said, I just don't think the WSOP would remain at the Rio if it were purchased by some non convention-space-owning entity, precisely for the reasons you mentioned... there would be more competition.

However, the Rio does have one thing going for it which some other locations do not.. ample and easily accessible parking. As an out-of-towner this has never affected me (I would refer the series were held at Caesars, or elsewhere on the strip). However, I'm sure locals prefer the Rio if only for the parking.

Personally , I go because there are so many possibilities;now remove the series from Vegas and see what you've got. Anyone can offer a building for a series outside of Vegas but the numbers will not follow.

I don't think any buyer would buy the series unless they knew exactly where it would go and they would also have the specifics of cost at their chosen site. If the numbers don't calculate , no sale. rio is an obvious choice and if Caesars wants to sell the series the patronage during the series wouldn't be a bad thing ; ie.they can use the business.
The satellite series held in Vegas during the summer exist because the WSOP exists, not the other way around. Sure, the Venetian, Wynn, etc might hold a series during that timeframe if there were no WSOP, like they do throughout the year. But they wouldn't be putting up the sorts of guarantees, expanding their footprints and taking the sorts of risks they do during the summer. And frankly, I doubt it would last. These venues make the majority of their annual tournament revenue in the summer. If the WSOP disappeared from Vegas, I don't think there would be nearly as much poker activity in general, and tournament activity specifically, especially in the summer.

My main point in this thread is really just this... if the WSOP is sold to some other concern which has assets in Vegas, then the WSOP will in all likelihood move to another location in Vegas. This would represent a non-insignificant change, since we don't know the logistical constraints such a move would entail. And if the WSOP is sold to some outside concern which isn't tied to Vegas as tightly, it could very well move out of the city entirely. This would obviously represent a major change.

And even if the WSOP doesn't get sold in the next year, this is the last year of ESPN coverage, barring some huge change of heart on the part of ESPN. Maybe the WSOP will make a deal with FS1 or some other network... but wherever they land for coverage, it will not be anything like it has been with ESPN. The WSOP will always have outlets to reach its core consumers here and abroad. But to reach more casual consumers will become much more difficult. This is bound to affect the WSOP in many ways. 2017 may be the last year we see the WSOP anything like its been in recent years. We should enjoy it. That's all I'm saying.

I'm looking at hotels for 6/1-6/14 and the wsop rates are are very high compared to other years. Other hotels are expensive as well. Any insight as to what has caused this increase?

Re: WSOP- 2017 ?

I have stayed the last 3 years at Treasure Island. I love the location. It is right across from the Venetian and I play live there as well as a couple tournaments.

The rates are really good. I call Casino Marketing and my rate last year was $1256 for 14 nights. That includes taxes and no resort fee. It was during the time the edc was in town so that weekend was more expensive.

I drop maybe a $100 in slot play so I have some action on my players card, but not really very much.

The rooms are nice, I like them.
They do however put a $100 per night hold on your card, because of the no resort fee, however they quickly take it off at check out.

They also have a cvs store there which you can pick up water, snacks, etc. I love that.

Hope that helps.

They don't make you put in any poker play at TI?

I don't play poker at TI, but I give them a little video poker action. Play $1 machines, that pay 9/6 and have a royal progressive, so not taking much the worst of it, and don't play that much, but they usually send pretty solid offers. Going next month for WSOPC, staying TI, 3 weekend nights comped, resort fees optional, $150 free play.

Rooms are fine, location is really good.

I used to stay at TI a lot. Didn't know you could get the casino rate without putting in a bunch of hours in the poker room though. Didn't know they had 9/6 either, although I don't like playing -ev stuff much anyway unless there's a big payback like CET has.

TI isn't the best location to get to the Rio. The closest shuttle is at Harrah's, which isn't horribly far, but the pickup spot is way in the back.

Right, I mean location really good in general, and I will be playing some at the V. Also, the location is great to get to Rio if you have a car, b/c you come out of the TI garage, zip around that little cut off (Mel Torme?) to Sammy Davis to Twain and you're in the WSOP parking lot in 5 minutes.

I don't get the poker rate at Treasure Island. I just ask for casino marketing and they give me great rates, better than the poker rates. You must have a players card though.

I don't know that route. I just go down Spring Mountain to Arville. Guess I need to study a map.

Just made reservations at Rio w/ Total Rewards membership. Comp for Wednesday and Thursday the 14th and 15th and then $160 per night (plus resort fee) for Saturday and Sunday. Not terrible.

That seems expensive for the Rio. Did you book for this coming week or what? Just a standard room?

Yes "WSOP rooms rates" for 2017 are substantially higher than 2016. According to these two pics at least. Maybe CETs final f u to the wsop players, their way of saying they're done after this year? Lol at the guy that replied to this and said "vegas is expensive now compared to past years" that is not the reasoning for this obv

Just sobering, add 12% for taxes and apprx $30/day resort fee. The $160 weekend becomes $210/night. To me, the Rio is not worth that price notwithstanding the convenience.

Of course, for a few days one might manage but for extended stays then its questionable, but to each his own.

Correct. But people put different value on the bolded, and some are willing to pay that much for it.

resort fees is such a big scam...before they wanted to charge $10/day for internet service. Now they are forcing us into it with the mandatory resort fees. If you are Diamond status you can get the resort fees waived. On top that, they want to start charging for parking.

Re: WSOP- 2017 ?

I've got three sets of 5 day stays book at RIO through the series. I paid $53 for one friday and the rest were comped. All saturdays and sundays were not free so I booked weekends at another place where it was.

I did Diamond in a Day last summer and gave no more action besides maybe $25K poker buy-ins.

Weirdly though I am barely Diamond my father is aspiration level 2 and his quoted weekend rates were slightly worse than mine.

Went back and checked my reservations and the one friday that was $53 dollars has dropped to $40.

No hotel in Vegas is. More than likely any place you find cheaper is going to be dumpier or downtown.
