Is there a prevailing thought as to late reg WSOP events that have lots of chips, like the Monster Stack or Giant? I guess my hope is to avoid the numbskulls that open for 400 when the blinds are 25/25. Anyone that's played the Colossal knows what I mean. I figure after 4 to 6 levels that a lot of those dimwits will be already knocked out and I will still start with a full stack.

I've only played bracelet events with small stacks, so I haven't given this idea much thought before.

I think it's really down to personal preference.
For some people, it's best to be there from level 1 as they like to play against the numbskulls and are able to take advantage of it. Grinder, for example, is really good at building up a massive stack early and often has a 4x stack by the time the late reggers sit down.
Others, like Daniel, see the benefit of saving their own energy and remaining fresh for the later levels.

Don't feel that you should late reg just because others do.

I'd never late reg these types of events if I could avoid it. You're really taking a chance on missing some stack-building dead money.

I have never understood the love for late reging.

A, you miss out on playing against the worst players.

B, you have to start with like 20 big blinds, while the average stack will be much greater than that, which seems like it would put you at a huge disadvantage.

This!! The longer you wait to sit down at the table, the less chance you have to encounter the worst players in the field as they won't last long.

I think it probably has more value for the guys who are out there grinding all summer and need to preserve some focus and energy for the important levels. For the weekend warriors, I think sitting down in the first couple levels is probably good.

As I mentioned in the OP I would only consider this for the big stack events.

As for the worst players, ime they are usually also the luckiest players, the kind that shove A6 against my AK and river the 6.

I would never reg with less than 40-50bb on purpose. However, I personally prefer to skip the first few levels. Yes I miss playing againster somewhat weaker competition, but the variance is reduced a bit and frankly, I can usually find better things to do with a couple hours of time.

If you're scared to play from level 1 in Monster with guys that open 400 at 25/25 (that's not a level and hasn't been for years now) you probably shouldn't be playing the event at all.

Agree with this. You should prolly try to play first level when all the dead money is still in. Just play nitty and nit roll if worried about making a mistake early I guess. I feel you lose out on value when you late reg. You have a lot less
Room to build a stack.

If I knew I could get in AK vs A6 in level 1 of the monster stack, not only would I make sure to show up on time, id be willing to pay something like $2200 to enter.
