Typical poker forum nit!
This is just not true. They had signs up all over AC and marketed this pretty well. Stop trolling. Also, go allen bari!

UB advertised for close to 4 months both a $4 million prize pool (800 players) and a $1 million first prize. When they got there and realized they weren't going to even hit 600 players, they reneged on the 4m guarantee, yet kept the $1m first prize, despite it being >1/3rd of the prize pool and completely ****ing up the pay scale.

And to answer your next question, no, the ads did not say "expected prize pool." I wish I still had the pic of the ads they had all over the internet. It also doesn't help their case that they kept one (the 1m 1st) and not the other, despite how absurd the 1m 1st prize was.

Yeah they did smarten up. They just got lucky that nobody in the tournament last year made a big stink about it (I had to sell my seat last minute due to health issues, otherwise I would have been that guy).

Their original claim was that they never said the 4m was guaranteed, which in itself is BS b/c they kept the 1m 1st prize despite how much it screwed up the pay scale. I doubt anybody will ever not go to a tournament because it figures to have an overlay. And even if it wasn't guaranteed, that would mean they bait and switched, which afaik is illegal.

But back on the original reason I brought it up, the point is that there have been big overlays before. Also, one would think the overlay would actually help future turnouts as opposed to hurting them. I'm sure MS will be fine; just a bit of a rude awakening.

did they chop, seemed like 3rd and 4th prize amounts were too close for it to be anything else

Chopped 4 ways. My boy David Zeitlin took 1st for $136k. Quality.

Can someone explain why the official prizepool was given as $689,500 when it was supposed to be a $700k guarantee?

Some % of the prizepool was withheld for staff, which they do in Connecticut (it's prohibited by law in New Jersey).

Well what a load of bollocks that is.

Fair enough, if that's accepted there then it's worth knowing the rules. Not that I agree with it, but whatever.

***edit***

Looks like the word bollocks doesn't get starred out. Must not be any British mods

MS takes 1.5% out of the pool for staff and dealer tokes...pretty standard procedure except for AC as Todd noted...in fact, ALL the casinos in las vegas take at least 3%....

And LOL at "lack of marketing/preparation", do you really think there was a big group of local players willing to enter a $2K event who didn't play because they were unaware that the event was taking place?
Bad room rates definitely hurt them somewhat as did the fact that was scheduled back to back to Borg deepstack.

There seems to be widely differing opinions about Mohegan Sun as a poker tournament venue, and differing opinions about what the big overlay means for MoSun and poker in the northeast.

I swear I'm not saying this because I just secured a lot of money in the main event: I really like Mohegan Sun and think it will become a viable option for us players.

Some people just love to bitch about everything and take themselves and their trifling lives way too seriously. It's just a poker tournament. This is a new spot that is still working out a few kinks, but the staff is bending over backwards to please the players. They lowered the vig on the main event when we spoke up. They gave us a structure with all those in-between levels that tourney nerds wet themselves over. When a rumor was floating that they may be cancelling the main 10 minutes before kickoff, they got on the PA system and said "that's crazy, of course we're honoring our guarantee." They stuck a breakfast spread, little sammiches and bags of potato chips on the side of the room for all us fat greasy pigs to devour (which didn't stop multiple people from wondering where the F their dinner comp was!).

The venue itself blows DumpWoods out of the water. The rooms and the restaurants are vastly superior. The fact that non-degenerate and non-geriatric humans frequent the joint also gives it an edge here.

As for the complaint about them failing to promptly report the tourney results, I have trouble relating. Yeah, it would be cool to become a famous poker guy, but I don't get off on watching my POY ranking go up three spots. I am familiar with a player who sits around auto-refreshing PokerPages profiles so he can be the first to know when someone mincashes something in Oklahoma. But I personally just don't care. I do have faith that this issue will ultimately be rectified, it's probably not too hard.

The big overlay was obviously great in the short run and possibly troubling in the long term. Rick sounded pretty assuring when he told me that the tribal elders (okay, they're probably suits but it's more fun to picture Indian Chiefs) have no intention of shutting things down. I think the place will be just fine, I certainly like playing there. We can speculate all we want about what caused the overlay (I'm partial to the post-WSOP, everyone is busto theory) but time will tell.

The one thing that's been mentioned that I completely agree with is more of an emphasis on sit n' go's is needed, and that they should be held in the same room as the daily events. Sit 'n go's are irresistible to the donks who just busted and the random dummies just milling around. You gotta put them right under everyones' noses, then they can't help themselves.

Wow--tl;dr territory now.

Cliffs notes: thanks Rick, I had fun. GL in the future, I'll be there.

Also Pepe's MF'n Pizza FTW.

Just so everyone knows... AC is allowed to start to do this starting in September. It will be anywhere from 0-3%. It will be up to each individual casino to make the call although I would expect most to do so, ,and probably around the 1.5% range

I entered event #9, the $350 bounty tournament, and it was my first tournament ever actually. I normally play craps at Mohegan Sun and sometimes the MGM side of Foxwoods; of all 47 casinos i've been to, The Borgata is my overall favorite.

But that's off topic. There were only 100 entrants into the tournament, which was advertised with 6,000 chips, but the director raised it to 10,000. I liked the bounty style. I found the dealers to be as friendly as the dealers at the craps tables. I have been in the Foxwoods poker room in some cash games, and I found this to be a little nicer, maybe because its newer and the ceilings are higher.

I didn't cash but i did collect a few bounties, so it was a good experience. I'm not going pro anytime soon, but with that expectation, it was a good learning experience.

Jeff
