Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

People value their tournament life in the ME more than any other tournament. By far. People will make HUGE folds if you put them all-in.

That can be used to your advantage if the right spot comes up to run a huge bluff.

More importantly, think about that when sizing your value bets. Going for half of someone's stack or 2/3rds of their stack will frequently have more cEV than trying to stack them. They might fold for all-in but call if you leave them 15bb behind.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

If you start losing chips on Day 1 don't panic. The structure is so good it might be worth leaving the table for a few orbits jut to settle down if you're tilting. Patience, patience, patience.

Even if you lose half your stack on day one, you will still start day 2 with 30bb! The structure is ridiculous.

if you fold every hand on day 1, you will only lose about 1/3rd of your stack. thats how good the structure is.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

Know that a large amount of any success/failure you'll have on any given day will be a result of the table draw/draws you have for that day. I did pretty well in the ME last year and days 1-4 I had relatively soft tables or at least when they were harder/more competent had a good seat at the table or the good players didn't feel like messing with me very much. Day 5 I was at table with 6 or 7 people who were high stakes tourney regulars all with many big blinds to start the day. Did what I could but wasn't able to advance past that. And that's just the way it goes sometimes. Advice-wise, it might be beneficial to tailor your strategy at the end of days to lightly stall/avoid higher risk spots because there's a good chance your table draw can improve in the next day's play.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

try to play your best at the end of the day, that applies to any multi-day tournament really but esp. the main. recreational players are not able to focus late in the day because they're not used to lasting that long and will often gift you their stacks.

This and me too.

Oh, and they always have it. Unless you know that they might not have it, in which case they never have it.

Def agree w others dont get discouraged if youre under starting stack. structures so deep that you could sit out of day one and go into day 2 w 19kis from 30k starting. thats like 40-50 bbs.

i agree w tm01 that tbl draw is huge. my first main not one person at my tbl busted on day 1. it sucked.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

SGT RJ, I played my first WSOP ME last year. One thing I was surprised with was how tight everyone was playing especially near the end of day 1.

As hinted at in the above post, though, the tourney just allows for so much play. You can't win the tournament on day 1, but you can definitely lose it. I finished day 1 last year with less chips than I'd started with, and still went pretty deep (/brag?)
jamie gold always has it man turns 27 in the aces like jesus turned water into wine, the kid is the truth.

Other then that be prepared too be there for hours and get some sleep don't drain yourself out in the later days do some work.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

Some really great advice so far.

I've got:

Play my game.
Stay patient/don't rush.
Don't get too fancy; there are plenty of people who will just gift chips.
Eat/sleep well, get some exercise.
Get away on dinner breaks.
Bring a sweater.
Turn off or ignore your phone.
Look to exploit really tight players/end of day play.
Get good table draw/cards.

I'm really looking forward to this, I've got some snacks (granola and trail mix, stuff like that), I'll have my iPod filled and always have a sweatshirt, my medication, and other necessary little things with me (I often bring a backpack when I play).

I'm also planning to start staying up late the week before I go to help with the three hour time shift, so I don't wear down too much near the end of the days. I don't drink much and have to regulate my sleep consistently anyway, so that shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I've got 30% of my own action and am just excited to play. I think the recent development of my cash game will really help, and my generally patient with spots of aggression tournament game fits in really well with deep stacked tournaments, which have always been my favorite.

Any more advice, I'd love to hear it. Just stuff that an ME noob might not know/consider.

Re: First WSOP ME - what did you wish you knew?

treat other tables/players at other tables like they don't exist, ignore them completely. it's easy to look at the sea of people and get intimidated, "oh, how am I gonna beat 6,000 players, look Ivey is at the table next to mine", you only have to play with 8 players, and you only have to stack one to win the tourney. just focus on ur table and on nothing else. resist looking at the tourney clock, especially in the first few days, it doesn't matter how many are left, it doesn't matter what the avg stack is, all that matters is how ur stack relates to the current blinds and who is at ur table. obv don't play reckless, but bring zero fear to the table, a mincash won't do **** for u, but a win is life changing
