Saw this on AV Club and thought it'd be fun for The Lounge.

List your favorite film of every year since the year you were born!
Your favorite is not necessarily the one you think is best...

List ONLY ONE film per year. This is harder than it looks.

While compiling my list, I was surprised at how many times I went with personal favorites over the more obvious "great" films of the year...

My list:

Of all the years, I felt that 1997 was probably the weakest...some good movies, obviously, but not many truly great ones.

Really hard to leave some movies off!

Dom,

Why is it that so many people I know hate Punch-Drunk Love? I love it.

It's my favorite film of PTA...it's perfect. I think it's because they're expecting an Adam Sandler movie...and it's not.

Nah. They don't care for Adam Sandler movies; I guess they're just not as romantic as I am.

First installment. This is much more difficult than anticipated. 1950 was almost impossible. I went with Born Yesterday because, although I fall in love often, it is always for life.

1947 -- Lady in the Lake
1948 -- Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House*
1949 -- Twelve O'Clock High
1950 -- Born Yesterday
1951 -- Alice in Wonderland*
1952 -- High Noon
1953 -- From Here to Eternity
1954 -- Seven Samurai
1955 -- Rififi
1956 -- The Killing

Wow, what a great topic for a thread. I decided to take Dominic's instruction literally and go with a favorite movie over a great (or even good) one. And to determine my "favorite," I went old school and thought back to a time before not only streaming movies and renting DVDs, but before VCRs as well. Back when there were only 3 or 4 TV stations and 2 might have on movies at the same time; you would then have to choose which one to watch and which one you'd miss. In using that criteria to pick my one and only movie to watch, I discovered that I am partial to light entertainment; i.e., musicals, romantic comedies, and sci-fi.

1956 - - - Forbidden Planet
1957 - - - The Bridge on the River Kwai
1958 - - - A Night to Remember
1959 - - - Operation Petticoat
1960 - - - The Apartment
1961 - - - The Hustler
1962 - - - The Music Man
1963 - - - The Great Escape
1964 - - - My Fair Lady
1965 - - - Cat Ballou
1966 - - - A Man For All Seasons
1967 - - - Barefoot in the Park
1968 - - - Oliver!
1969 - - - Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid
1970 - - - Patton
1971 - - - Fiddler on the Roof
1972 - - - The Godfather
1973 - - - The Sting
1974 - - - Young Frankenstein
1975 - - - The Man Who Would Be King
1976 - - - All The President's Men
1977 - - - Annie Hall
1978 - - - Animal House
1979 - - - All That Jazz
1980 - - - Coal Miner's Daughter
1981 - - - Excalibur
1982 - - - My Favorite Year
1983 - - - The Big Chill
1984 - - - Amadeus
1985 - - - Lost in America
1986 - - - Hannah and Her Sisters
1987 - - - Broadcast News
1988 - - - Die Hard
1989 - - - When Harry Met Sally
1990 - - - Miller's Crossing
1991 - - - Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
1992 - - - Reservoir Dogs
1993 - - - Dave*
1994 - - - Pulp Fiction
1995 - - - The Usual Suspects
1996 - - - Fargo
1997 - - - L.A. Confidential
1998 - - - Rounders
1999 - - - Galaxy Quest
2000 - - - Gladiator
2001 - - - A Knight's Tale
2002 - - - Chicago
2003 - - - Kill Bill Vol. 1
2004 - - - Sideways
2005 - - - Good Night, and Good Luck
2006 - - - The Last King of Scotland
2007 - - - Charlie Wilson's War
2008 - - - Bottle Shock
2009 - - - Pirate Radio
2010 - - - True Grit

2012 - - - Les Miserables
2013 - - - Pacific Rim
2014 - - - The Imitation Game
2015 - - - Amy
2016 - - - Lion

* I had to pick Dave because I was an unpaid extra in it for a couple of days of filming, lol.

I loved it when I first saw it on a local TV station in the early '70s, back in the days when it had movie packages that included it along with other late night films such as Black Orpheus and a whole slew of early Bergman movies.

We almost had two more. I was very close to choosing Manhattan over All That Jazz, and Arrival over Lion.

I found it interesting that there were some years I had a difficult choice between 2,3, or more films; and yet there were other years in which I had a difficult choice because I had no obvious favorite and I had to pick one from a few so-so mediocrities.

The hardest decision for me was taking Lawrence of Arabia over La Jetee. But I saw Lawrence of Arabia in a theater when I was a kid, and it's probably the one movie that made me fall in love with how films could tell stories.

The Fifties:

1952- Ikiru (Year of conception and annunciation)
1953 – Roman Holiday (Birth year)
1954- The Seven Samurai
1955 – The Lady and the Tramp
1956 - Giant
1957 – The Seventh Seal
1958 – Mon Oncle
1959 – Some Like it Hot

*************************************

Can't believe that Phat Mack did not pick an Abbot and Costello movie from the 1940's. I think I watched almost all of them, they used to have them on TV every Saturday afternoon when I was growing up, we saw them over and over again. Great fun.
