The French were a vital American ally in the Revolutionary War. We probably wouldn't have won without them. Brigadier General O'Hara actually handed his sword of surrender to the French general Rochambeau instead of General Washington.

Hi all. I've spent three straight days working on a syllabus for class. I am happy to be done and taking a break by celebrating fireworks day!

I am still standing as is my house. The winds co-operated last night and did what they were supposed to do and actually died down and were calm much quicker than they were supposed to.

The bad news is that there is fire about 5 miles from my home sort of moving our way. But, there is a lot of line around it, they are hitting it with water from helicopters and there is a fairly major hwy between me and the fire.

The fire is now 244,000+ acres now and still growing. Last night did get a bit wild on some of the fire but it was quite a ways from my house. I did listen in on the radio to hear the county Sheriff going house to house just ahead of the fire getting people out and tryng to make sure they were all right. I have not heard of anyone who got hurt but there were some anxious moments.

Now I am going to go out and look for idiots shooting off fireworks. If they are we get to call the sheriff or BIA and they will face $500 fines and up to 6 months in Jail.

My July 4 was spent sleeping in, then having srs biznis discussions with the gf.

I've pretty much made up my mind. I am leaving my job in September, probably only going to give 4 weeks notice, as she has essentially fired me anyway. The situation at work has become totally untenable. I am so depressed it's to the point of despair, and I need to get out before it affects me more.

This means I have to leave the country, and D will be coming to Australia for Christmas, as was initially planned. Then I will be returning to the States on a fiancee visa to get married. During this period we decide if we want to live in Aus or the States, and after we get married start the process of immigration to whatever country we decide on.

I've decided I'm done with research. I don't think it's for me any more, I was feeling this way towards the end of my PhD, was trying to put it down to being sick of the PhD itself, but the feeling persisted, and yeah.

I am sick of bench work, sick of being a lab rat, sick of the feeling that my work may vaguely down the line help out but probably not, sick of being cooped up by myself at a bench for hours on end. I want to work with people. I'm excited by the opportunity to be able to do whatever I want, instead of what everyone expects you to do as a BSc grad.

That may end up being teaching. That thought excites me a bit.

In the US, if you want to teach above the community college level, you'd probably have to do more research than you've done. Or is that your target?
